View Full Version : Cheapest way to have custom name servers?
Hello. Does anyone know a cheap way to have custom name servers on your domain whois info without having a dedicated or VPS server?
For example, instead of setting the DNS to NS1.[another_company].COM I want it to show NS1.[mysite].COM
I'm not comprehending whether this is a registrar feature or web host.
If anyone can kindly explain I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
PingVPS 05-04-2010, 03:34 PM get a reseller account and most if not all will set you up custom name servers for free.
Yep and also some 3rd party dedicated DNS providers provide "branded DNS" as it's called..
afraid.org being one of them.
Thanks for the response. Is it possible to use custom name servers on regular shared hosting?
Maybe like some sort of alias?

If you get a reseller account this can be setup for you by almost all providers.
Jake-GV 05-04-2010, 04:48 PM Just purchase a domain, if you have a reseller, great, but if not or your still unsure, you're hosting provider may be able to help you anyway, which may require purchasing more IP addresses
TBradley 05-04-2010, 08:03 PM Basically any Reseller Account should come with this standard. It is something your Host would have to do, not the registrar.
nightshadowprods 05-11-2010, 09:39 AM If a reseller hosting package doesn't allow for custom nameservers, then that defeats the purpose of reseller packages to begin with, I'd imagine. Most registrars make it quite easy to register custom nameservers, which is something you have to do to ensure that there is "glue" for the nameservers.
But yes, any decent reseller host will make this option available to its clients.

This is not a standard feature, in fact many hosts do not allow custom nameservers, and some even charge a small fortune for it.
Also, it needs to be done at host and registrar level as the host has to enable it, and you also need to set the custom/child nameservers and a-records on your registrars control panel.
findnewbrunswick 05-14-2010, 12:19 AM Most shared web hosts will allow you to use custom nameservers. Usually costs about $25 from what I've seen.

I'm sure there are some outfits that charge for it, but the vast majority do not. Free vanity nameservers are a de facto standard.
Ayeshrajans 07-03-2010, 12:06 PM This is a trick!
Find the IP address of the nameservers that the host give you.
Then, give a try at the registrar's nameserver panel, by adding your own nameservers with those IPs as glue records.
larwilliams 07-03-2010, 12:37 PM The best way to do it is to have a Dedicated IP and create nameserver records at your domain registrar using that IP.

That's the proper way it's done with shared hosting. Unless your customers are really advanced with DNS, they will believe you have your own server.
But I wouldn't mislead them and actually state that. Just let them assume it.

You could try hostwoot.com
They are very good post to host providers. I got account with them and you'll be amazed to see how good the service is. You need to make only few posts on hostwoot forums and you can get yourself a really good reseller package. Best thing is that for few extra posts you can get ffmpeg reseller hosting.
to brand your reseller you will need to get dedicated IP address which I think is US $3.00.

That won't work if the host has their DNS servers separate to their cPanel servers. The better way would be to use the IP's from the DNS servers provided, usually ns1/ns2.domain.com.
mdadnan 05-25-2011, 01:34 AM Enom and ResellerClub provide this service free of cost as long as you are a reseller with them.
