View Full Version : GoDaddy Price Hike
Received this today:
Dear Jason Scales,
On July 1, 2010, VeriSign®, the registry for .COM and .NET, will increase prices – .COM will go up 7%, and .NET by 10%.
The increase will be passed to registrars like Go Daddy and then, unfortunately, to consumers like you.
As of July 1, we will be forced to raise registration and renewal* prices for these two popular top-level domains.
If you wish to avoid this price increase, you can renew your domain names by June 30 and add another year to your current expiration dates. You have the option to register or renew for multiple years and lock in long-term savings. Of course, should you have any questions, please give us a call at 1-480-505-8821.
Thanks as always for being a Go Daddy customer.
Sincerely,
Bob Parsons
CEO and Founder
GoDaddy.com
HostColor 05-03-2010, 05:02 PM Congratulations :) I should say that GoDaddy are good in domain name registration business, the best ones actually... but aren't a lost cost registrar anymore.
MikeDVB 05-03-2010, 05:26 PM Their pricing is increasing and as such they are passing on the increases to their customers in order to maintain their profit margin.
Nothing wrong with that ... if you're going to be upset - be upset at the companies that are raising pricing on GoDaddy :)

Not upset at all. I renewed my only domain there just yesterday and I continue to use NameCheap for most of my registrations. Concur with the post above, GoDaddy aren't anywhere near as competitive right now.
This was just a general thread, not exactly me moaning, Mike ;)
nameslave 05-03-2010, 09:07 PM Sorry to say, the thread title is very misleading. This is NOT a GoDaddy price hike, but one from the registry.
ubservers 05-03-2010, 09:41 PM Maybe they rise of 10% for domain registration, even 20% would be cheap when you think of the price of a domain name. What you get from GoDaddy is a reliable and long term provider for your domains.
M Bacon 05-03-2010, 09:55 PM Why not go with a godaddy reseller since the pricing is much cheaper? Is godaddy going to charge over $11?

$7.29 .com WWD Pro
Why is godaddy charging this much since they charge much cheaper on the godaddy reseller plans?
It does not sound right at all and Privacy Protection is double the cost after the first year as well.
Look. The advice to take from this thread is that all Registrars will be raising their prices on July 1st (or there abouts). So you better take GoDaddy's advice and lock in the current prices by renewing your domains before 1st July.
CanSpace 05-04-2010, 01:42 PM I believe the registry price increases have been discussed here for quite some time. You can't really fault godaddy for not absorbing these new costs. OTOH, you can fault ICANN for raising fees so drastically...
oliviakitty 05-05-2010, 03:14 PM I think it's funny they used percents.
The actual increase will be 48 cents (.COM) and 42 cents (.NET)
I wonder if GoDaddy's hike will exceed that :stickout:
nameslave 05-05-2010, 03:55 PM I think it's funny they used percents.
Because this is what ICANN allows?
oliviakitty 05-05-2010, 06:52 PM Because this is what ICANN allows?
What are you talking about?
I meant they used percents to describe the hike.
A number can be expressed as the actual number (as I listed in my posts), or as a percentage of another number.
ICANN has nothing to do with it.

ICANN's contract says "7%", not an actual number.
techjr 05-05-2010, 08:02 PM Why does icann raise the prices in the first place?
elmister 05-05-2010, 08:42 PM The contract is for 7 years, in 4 of those years Verisign can raise the price up to 7%/year
Correct elmister. I blame ICANN for signing such a stupid agreement in the first place. Their increments do have a feel of being front-end loaded.

PipeSurfer 05-06-2010, 02:05 PM More than VeriSign, all the Registries will increase their pricing. The new gTLDs should go live by 2012 and the Registries will try and maximize revenue from existing market share before that.
I only fault VeriSign though, market economics demand they lower those god damn domain fees!
Shannara 05-06-2010, 03:02 PM It looks like Godaddy is passing along these raises only to certain customers. I never received that email.
albatroz 05-06-2010, 04:50 PM Why does icann raise the prices in the first place?
Dollar/ Euro exchange rate could be a factor for the raise.
livtext 05-11-2010, 10:56 AM more profit... more profit... and consumers pay pay pay more....
nameslave 05-11-2010, 03:38 PM Dollar/ Euro exchange rate could be a factor for the raise.
Good guess, but ... sorry, no.
assistanz247 05-12-2010, 04:47 PM The price increase will definitely not going to stop people registering domain names. Why worries - After all we are consumers!
WireNine 05-12-2010, 07:29 PM https://investor.verisign.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=431292 more details available from verisign.
elmister 05-12-2010, 07:45 PM If you have a balance in dollars, spend now and save
If you have the money in euro, you can wait and see if it recovers or not
MrPiang 05-13-2010, 12:19 AM I'll leave GoDaddy to other registrars, No point to staying with them then. I can get cheaper price with other provider afterall.

It depends if you use discount coupons or not ;)
paulgeek 05-15-2010, 07:21 AM Most of our salaries have been stagnant for the past year or so but there are price hikes everywhere. And the Fed is still worried about deflation.
