Why do some data centers announce that they have raised floors? what are they for?

Better air flow/cooling.

arr...

I though it was so the cables could go underground and it would make the place look nice..

That too. Sometimes, cables come from the ceiling but raised floors are good since the tiles have holes where air can travel through.

Raised flooring is primarily for cooling purposes, hence why in some data centre pics you'll see lots of grilles on the floor (e.g. http://pics.kdawebservices.com/details.php?image_id=53) - they are for aircon, pump cool air at the bottom of a rack and suck the hot out of the top. Also cabling is generally done under the floor as well if raised floors are available, hence the gray circles on the floor in that picture too.

Also, if for some reason the floor was to flood (not sure how, but you never know), it would have to fill the building up more than a foot to get to the servers.

Cooling and cables.

If you look under the floor, your see a mass of cables etc.

This actually happened about a year or so ago.

One of Verizon's buildings in New Jersey flooded because someone left the back door open during very heavy rains.

Extra features such as these are nice to have but, frankly, I'd rather be in a datacenter with excellent connectivity to multiple backbones and very clueful admins/engineers instead of a pretty white floor to look at - just my opinion. :D

Just my shoot but...

I rather be in a DC that does not leave the backdoor opened :)

Than i can relax

Well if your DC is on the second floor. I don't think this is a problem.

2º floor ...

Water pipes ?

Hell is better to have like that than not to have it :)

Karl, Redbus looks very "clean" loved the pictures of the many break glass switches :D

Hope to get down there myself some day

<EDIT - not Redbust heh>

Owww you don't mean that Jordan keeps you locked in a cupboard all day do you? :)

Not very often that I'm there, so I took photos of everything, no matter how trivial or geeky :D

Over rated :)

As a side note, I'd be worried if a DC had water pipes going through data floors, as for raised floors helping - I doubt it seen as under the floor is where the cables would 99% of the time run with raised floors and water + cables (especially eletricity) don't mix.

I'm allowed out at weekends :D

ah wait...but...oops - i'm going out soon (honest!)

I hear Redbus have some wicked pens ;)

One thing I should mention about the water pips under the raised floor... Keep in mind some of these A/C systems do use "Chilled Water" and have it piped to each unit and guess where the pipes are.. ;-) Also, keep in mind that if the A/C unit malfunctions, or the drain gets clogged, it will spew water under the floor. I have seen it happen is why I mention it.
