Hi, I am wanting to start a company and have it a "Green Web Hosting Company" now here is the problem I have a plan on how to do this but I need some feedback on about if this is going to work or not going to work. So here goes everything:

For every order I get ill put $2.00 away into a account and for every $20.00 I make ill plant a tree. Also this will be monthly so for every client that pays or any type of income I get $2.00 will go into a "Green Account".


How dose that sound?

How much is it to plant a tree?

Is there any companys out there or site where I can pay or donate and they plan trees somewhere?

Its nice to see another host getting into the "green" market which is quite vague at the moment however I would say that you are going down a good route. There are quite a few companies that you can donate money and they basically give you a certificate saying how many tree's they've planted because of you, below is a few as you asked:

You should also think about getting someone in from numerous companies which can calculate the amount of CO2 you actually emit each year/month and then you can plant the number of tree's times x with that.

Not to mention things like green credits or actually getting your offices/home/data center powered by a wind turbine or something fully green.

I don't own a data center or anything but I was also thinking if I get as big as like hostgator and run on a dedi server selling vps and below that ill try to contact my dc and give them money to throw in a nice green system for there cooling and power use.

Good luck with your plans and I hope that eventually you do get as big as "HostGator" unfortunately this is very unlikely in the huge market that is hosting at the moment but that's not me putting you down it's just a bit of reality im afraid but still good luck.

As for your latest idea about giving your DC money to go completly or partially green I think this would a step to far unless you actually OWN the DC which is really expensive and you'd have to be quite large, however you would need to think about the other customers that may not want to go completly green. Just my thoughts.

I think that will definitely help you in making that step to becoming a green web host. It is a great idea but don't stop there. I am sure there are sites that plant trees, you can google that. You can set it up and tell them what you would like to do and I am sure that they would be extremely happy and maybe give you positive PR. I know here in Maine where I am from I could get the news company at my doorstep if I told them I was going to do that to take the first step going green.

I like how you say good luck. But I don't like how you tell the kid who still believes in santa that there is no santa claus. lol

The best thing for a company to do is think big. Start small but always think big. If you think big you will always work hard at what you do. If you accept the level your company is at you are just going to ride it out. Keep it up, I think the tree planting is a great idea.

The plan is quite good! I think its better to give this money to some NGO as they are good one to donate!

I think it is a good idea if you stick to it. I once thought about it and it is something I will be considering again soon, once I get a free moment.

Should you not think about planting trees regardless of how many signups you get. After all your servers will still be running?

You can also approach the green hosting field from another angle - making your power usage more efficient. In fact, I think this is the strategy that will win out in the long run. Planting trees is certainly a good part of this strategy, but I think if you can approach this from two directions, you'll do better in the long run.

There are also other things you can focus on:
- Allowing employees to work from home, reducing CO2 emissions
- Responsibly disposing of end-of-life hardware, including cell phones, servers, etc

I like the tree planting idea. It's a positive step in the right direction and something that anyone can pay to do.

That is an excellent point Stealthy One. Hardware becomes obsolete so fast, planning for responsible end-of-life disposal/recycling is a key to a "green plan". There are many ways other ways to be green. I think the most important for green hosting being power consumption. Ways to consume more efficiently and using sustainable sources of power.

The planting a tree idea is pretty slick. Definitely nice to see someone else going green.

This is a really good idea! You could even charge a premimum for it as in the EU, businesses are being pressured to "Go Green" and some larger ones even have to by law. By saying that they use a "Green Datacentre" is a fantastic way to achieve this goal!

One thing though, are you going to plant the trees yourself, or get someone else to do it? You're gonna end up with a lot of trees... :)

Quite a good idea. But in the Green Biz it's important to keep your equipment at the lowest power which causes it to minimize carbon oxide emission.

This should be your base when going into Green Hosting Services.

There are many datacenters like Servint & Evoswitch that are actually "green." Most use carbon credits to consider themselves green, however it's a great start for you.

i really like the idea. I wonder if there is an easier organization that could help you plant the trees as it seems like you could have a full time job planting trees if you sell a few hundred accounts per month.
