I don't know what's going on, but all of the sudden I am getting multiple popup ads every 5 minutes now! It's driving me nuts! I haven't changed anything lately that would do this... so... I'm not sure what's going on.

So... does anyone know how I can get rid of these? Please? I really need help... w.w;;

Damn... it didn't get rid of them! I went away for 4 hours, came back, and there were 12 popups on my screen! Where are they coming from?!

Also, whenever I go to a wrong URL in IE... it brings me to some stupid 'Xupiter' search site... how do I get rid of that?

Please help.

Open the registry (from the Start menu, click Run and enter regedit) and find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Delete the 'XupiterStartup' entry.

Open a DOS command prompt window (Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter the following commands to deregister the toolbar.

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Xupiter\Updates\XupiterToolbar.dll"
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Xupiter\Updates\XTUpdate.dll"
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Xupiter\Updates\XTSearch.dll"

(If your Program Files folder is something other than 'C:\Program Files' - for example because you have installed on a different drive or you are using a non-English version of Windows, you will have to change the commands accordingly. You may also not need the last line, if you have an older version of the software without the XTSearch.dll file, so do not worry if this command gives an error.)

Restart the computer and you should be able to delete the Xupiter folder in Program Files. You can now restore your home page (Internet Options->General->Home page) and your search settings (Internet Options->Programs->Reset web settings). You can also delete the registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xupiter and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units\{A27CFCAE-9351-4D74-BFFC-21EB19693D8C} to clean up if you wish.

Thank you so much! I finally got rid of that Xupiter thing! However, where would I go to delete those two registry keys that you mentioned?

Only thing left to do now is get rid of the damn ads. They don't seem as bad now since I did that lavasoft thing... but... they still do occur quite occasionally.

Please help if you know anything at all.

Click start ---> run and type regedit press enter. You can find and delete the keys mentioned in your registry. You can also use edit ---> find and search for xupiter and delete the entries.

Finally, download and install RegCleaner (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml) to search and cleanup invalid registry entries. Run Adaware again and restart your computer.

I don't even think that'd work, would it? I mean... I thought that only worked for when you're crusing the net?

Anyhow, I went to work for 5 hours today... came back home... and my computer had 35 f'ing ads popped up on the screen! There has got to be something I can do... please.

Format. I love to format it's so much fun to reinstall programs, start from new and the speed is great!

After you format, get AVG ( http://www.grisoft.com ) AdAware ( http://lavasoft.de ) The Cleaner ( http://www.moosoft.com/ - Paid) or Swat It ( http://lockdowncorp.com - free) and Tiny Personal Firewall ( http://tinysoftware.com )

They are all free except for The Cleaner, and they will all keep your computer safe.

Don't forget to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

I don't want to format. It would take way too long to get back all of my programs

And ReveX, if you would have read my response, you'd see that I already tried that lavasoft program and it didn't get rid of them.

It says:

---
(Go to Control Panel > Perf. & Maint. > Administrative Tools > Services. Double click the Messenger Service, change 'Automatic' to 'Disabled' and click the Stop button.)
---

However... I don't see "Messanger Service" in there anywhere. Help...?

I think it's not "Messenger Service" just "Messenger"

Ad-Aware 5.X is no longer being maintained, thus the data files are no longer being updated to recognize the newer spyware, pop-up gizmos and whatnot. The last update was in September. (They're working on 6.X so they've decided to abandon 5.X.)

There are other free spyware killers that are still being maintained though. One of the more well-known ones is Spybot Search and Destroy, at http://security.kolla.de/
