Most design companies make their icons from scratch. Others use google images :D

Where do such design companys or hosts get their icons for their websites ?

There are many commercial sites available, such as iStockphoto (http://www.istockphoto.com/), or if you search around the net you can often find designers' who offer some of their works for free.

IconFinder (http://www.iconfinder.com/) can be a great search for icon sets... "always check the license before using any icons commercially." ...and just finding them on Google does not mean it's free to use.

if you google "free icon sets" you will find a number of blog posts containing many links to some great free icon sets that look very nice on websites.

There are numerous vector icon sets out there for free, just search and you'll find them.

I have bought some from iStockPhoto, they are great, you should try ! Otherwise hire a web design :)

hire a graphic/icon designer

There are many other websites which have icons. Just go there and edit them in the way that you are not going against copyright act of any website. SImple!!
