Hi, I'm not the most computer literate of people and I need some help if at all possible.
One of my friends bought the domain name for my blog site because I didn't really know how to and since then it has been owned by him and used by me. Recently he sadly passed away, so my question is, is there any possible way of me getting the domain name back into my hands so that I can keep it from expiring?
Thanks.

Contact the domain company and tell them your story. IF you have proof he bought it for you and he died then im pretty sure they will transfer it to you

Use a WHOIS tool to determine who the Registrant of the domain is. If your friend registered it in your name, you can approach the registrar and will probably be successful in claiming ownership.
If it's registered in your friends name, then the domain will likely be ceded to their estate, in which case you would probably want to approach the family first and executor second. Explain the situation and ask them to discuss the possibility of formally transferring ownership to you. Again, the registrar may be best positioned to explain the process (if such a thing exists) and any requirements they may have in such instances. Any communication may have to go to the registrar via the executor of the estate.
If the domain is privacy protected, you may face additional complications, but it may still be worth a try.
Worst case scenario would mean you'd have to wait until it expires and then catch it when it drops.

I do not think that might help. But maybe they are having any ideas how to check if you are real site owner.

When someone dies, their assets are divided among the family as per the will; if no will exists, then they are divided as per the law.
I'm not sure, but i believe the domain was also his asset and the ownership could be legally transferred to someone in the family. You might wanna contact a lawyer about this. Then, contact the registrar about the death (they may need proof like a death certificate) and have it transferred to someone of his family (if he was married, it could be his wife or children) and then transfer it to you.
You will need to contact his family before all of it.

What is the expiry date of domain?
Actually there are two alternatives-
1) Contact the hosting company and tell the truth. They might ask some documents for it and might then proceed.
2) Wait for domain to get expired and then renew it with your name.
