Who says OpenSource is not hip anymore? One of the hot and most recent participants to join the OpenSource brigade was the DotNetPanel used widely as Windows hosting control panel for Shared, Dedicated, VPS, Sharepoint and Exchange hosting. The makers of the ideal DotNetPanel that has simplified windows hosting management procedures, recently revamped their codebase and published the new code under the latest label WebsitePanel.

The new turn in the direction of an open source program would directly leverage continual development of the control panel that would be more scalable and cost-effective to both developers and members of web hosting community. The CEO and President of DotNetPanel, Feodor Fitsner assured that the new panel is easy to integrate in existing clients current solutions while giving extended features for customer management.

All the ongoing members of the current DotNetPanel would have access to free community support for a limited duration from SMB SAAS Systems Inc. Customers would have access to future updates, bug fixes and subsequent versions at no additional cost through the WebsitePanel open source project. The new panel is secure, scalable and fully capable of managing multiple servers and comes with an extensive list of supported softwares and community support.

I had just seen the news. I guess this will provide stiff competition to any commercial Windows Controlpanel provider as Dotnetpanel has quite good features. Quite a big surprise but overall it should be good for the typical web hosters with competition in the Windows Hosting Panel arena. For Linux we have a lot of good open sources panels not not Windows. Seems that this trend is changing.

We have been receiving many inquiries on this topic. The decision by DotNetPanel to go Open Source could have a big impact in the hosting world. But DotNetPanel was doing rather well. Why go Open Source now?

This article makes some solid educated guesses and is a must read if you are interested:

The SharePoint + Exchange support worries me considering we just switched to DNP 6 months ago and now this happens. SharePoint 2010 is here now and I have no idea when this support will be in this product. :(
