But then again, this is not unique to W2k. ;) jolly 12-06-2002, 12:05 PM SCSI drives :D The Laughing Cow 12-06-2002, 12:26 PM If you want to do it well and save headaches in the end, do it well. I personally am all for something like Dual 1 to 2 Ghz CPU's 2GB Ram SCSI/fast IDE drives, RAID maybe? Fahd 12-06-2002, 01:22 PM Wow....looks like everyone agrees with a dual processor. We are currently planning on a P4 2Ghz with 1 GB RAM and 80 GB 7200 RPM HDD for about 25-50 clients. Bandwidth usage will be around 100-150 GB. This is plain windows hosting. I thought these specs would be more than enough for this purpose. Am I wrong? OJI 12-06-2002, 01:28 PM I have a dual 2.8 Xeon with 2GB PC2100 and 120 GB IDE in a nice 4U case - sitting in my room doing nothing. Built it all for a beauty of a price - 1200 (ext VAT) :D now thats what you call a sever Fahd 12-06-2002, 01:32 PM Originally posted by OJI I have a dual 2.8 Xeon with 2GB PC2100 and 120 GB IDE in a nice 4U case - sitting in my room doing nothing. The Laughing Cow 12-06-2002, 02:09 PM Sounds like you want to send that down to me to fit into a rack :D OJI 12-06-2002, 02:10 PM sorry - i meant £1200 which roughly translates int $1880. Its the mobo that keeps the cost down - i7500 (http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderi7500.html) - put into a lovely 4U box - all other parts from my lovely trade supplier. :D (its soooooooo sweet) ServerCorps 12-06-2002, 05:12 PM I got 1.4 Ghz AMD 512 Ram 40 Gig ata 100 HD 1U case 300w PS mega cooling for 75-100 sites protecweb 12-06-2002, 05:24 PM Dual P3s and min 1GB ram to allow your clients to do heavy ASP and .NET. Brad @ Xiolink 12-06-2002, 05:33 PM It really depends upon what you will be doing with the server. If you are serving up static sites and don't anticipate a ton of traffic, there are lots of options. You don't need the fastest processor. You will want a minimum of 256MB RAM. We have lots of customers operating very well on Celeron 600 to Celeron 800 boxes with 128 or 256MB RAM. When you start doing database transactions and more dynamic content you may want more umph from your server. Dual procs are nice but not always necessary. I would invest in RAM before a dual proc. If you pm me with more information on what you are doing (programs, traffic, etc), I will give you more information or recommendations on ideal specs for a Windows server. |
