Hi,

I know this is probably not the forum for this, but I thought I take a chance and ask.. Maybe someone could help me..

Just to get you informed, I have a pretty decent computer at home. AMD Athlon 650mhz, 512mb 133mhz ram, 36GB SCSI HD, Elsa Geforce2 GTS 32mb, etc..

Now there is one game I play on my free time that I really enjoy. The problem is the damn game crashes on me almost every single time. Sometimes I can play a while, but a lot of the time it crashes only after a few minutes. I even tried to make a fresh reboot and close everything I possibly could so no other programs would conflict with it, no use! Also a lot of the time when it crashes it takes the computer with it as well..

This is really starting to bug me and I'm just about to throw the damn computer out of the window and run outside so I can kick it.

Why is it crashing? What is causing it? How can I fix it?

Which game? Do any of your friends play it under Win2k?

The game I'm playing is Counter Strike (addon to HalfLife). I'm starting to think that I need to format my drive (although I did it last month). The reason is because the game works fine when there's a fresh install. As it is now when I close windows, the computer stops at a black screen and I have to reboot manually. It exits windows without any problems.

YOU mgiht check for a patch for counterstrike, counterstrike wasnt initially made to run with win2000 same with the underlying half life program.

Counterstrike works fine for me on Win2000. I have SP1, with a 500MHz P3 and 512MB of RAM with a n ATI Radeon 32MB DDR. I have some friends who run Counterstrike on a GF2 GTSon Win2k, so that's not the problem.

First, download the latest version of your card's drivers. If you have and that didn't help, then try getting SP1. I assume you have CS 1.1 because you couldn't play without it.

Yes, I have CS1.1..
I have everything installed on windows update except 4 things:

MSN Messenger Service 3.6
Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools
AOL Image Support Update for Windows 2000
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview

I have service pack 1 installed.. It's just IE 5.5 that I have not installed becuase it's to slow.

And Yes!, I have the latest graphics card drivers installed as well. Although when I installed them it warned me that they are not compatible with win2k, but on their site where I downloaded it from it had a Win2k compatible picture next to it..

Keep in mind that it seemed to be working without any problems last time I did a clean format.

If a fresh installation of Windows 2000 stops the problem could it be that it has a Microsoft created driver for your video card to get it to work? Then when you install your latest video card driver over it becomes unstable?

Just a guess as it sounds like you have the latest patches installed already and that typically fixes these issues.

Also, rather then using the default driver for your card after the Windows 2000 installation try the the nVidia Detonator 3 drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/products.nsf/htmlmedia/detonator3.html

The Detonator 3 drivers should work just fine as they support the GeoForce, GeoForce2, etc.

Let us know if any of this helps.
