View Full Version : Zencart vs WHMCS
softcenter 04-12-2010, 12:04 AM Whats the difference between Zen Cart and WHMCS?
Do i need to integrate both of them into my site or just one enough? Please explain me.....
TBradley 04-12-2010, 12:27 AM Well, what are you wanting to do?
If you are wanting to start a web hosting company, then WHMCS would be best.
If you were wanting to start an ecommerce site not selling web hosting, then ZenCart would be best.
Maybe if you would specify what you are trying to do it would be easier to help you.
softcenter 04-12-2010, 01:30 AM I plan to start a web hosting company. So, WHMCS would be the best for me right? So, Just to confirm, do i need to integrate Zen Cart to my site for any reason? or forget it?
TBradley 04-12-2010, 02:08 AM First off, you need a reseller account to get started with hosting. Then, you will need a WHMCS license, this is less than $10 a month. There would be no need for ZenCart.
Katatonic 04-12-2010, 02:13 AM If you want to start a web hosting company, stick with WHMCS.
You can lease a license very cheap monthly:
http://www.licensepal.com/
Then factor in a cPanel license + server + administration, you're looking at $50 (VPS) to $150 (dedicated server) a month for a very basic setup.
You don't need the Zen cart as WHMCS will handle all the billing and general setup of accounts.
TBradley 04-12-2010, 02:16 AM But just starting out, a Reseller plan would be more than enough. So it will not cost you near that. You should be looking at hosting + whmcs license at $30 a month or less.
Katatonic 04-12-2010, 02:38 AM I always like to suggest people get a VPS and play with it (or setup a local VM) so they know what they're getting themselves into, and thus can provide better support once they learn the ins and outs of the operating system.
More a preferential recommendation than a cost effective one since to me the extra cost is insignificant and makes a big difference. None the less, reselling is a good starting point and good way to keep costs down (whether it'd be shared, VPS etc) as it reduces overheads too.
TBradley 04-12-2010, 02:41 AM Getting a server, VPS or Dedicated does force you into the learning curve, but I was referring to reseller because of cost effective measures. A VPS or Dedicated Server would be fine if you don't mind the extra overhead.
Katatonic 04-12-2010, 02:50 AM Yep - we've said the same thing. Heh.
softcenter 04-12-2010, 07:51 AM Thank you for all of your replies. Am more than clarified. Thank you all.
TBradley 04-12-2010, 01:52 PM i'm interest in the costs too
The cost of a Reseller Package would run around $20. The price of a WHMCS license would be $10 or less, depending on what you need.

Zen Cart shop application - you can sell the products, as for WHMCS billing and support application for webhost.
You comparing 2 different things, like asking what the difference between cycle and car?
bozonessinc 04-12-2010, 03:04 PM WHMCS looks best for the purpose, as it has the auto add new hosting to your cpanel, whereas I think Zen Cart will lack in that feature.
However, if you are selling "objects you can hold in your hand" I think Zen Cart should be used.
