A lot has been made in the media recently of DDoS attacks against the main DNS servers - there are around nine - most in the US I believe.

I was wondering bearing in mind the current political climate: What if there was an unprecedented attack on US soil - one which knocked out a couple of Internet exchanges or server complexes - would you be any better off having a country domain (ie .au) than a .com or a .net?

Sorry if this is all highly hypothetical - I only have a casual interest in the answer.

There are 13 root servers, and not all of them are in the United States, but those root servers are the ones that delegate the country codes, so no, a country domain would not be more durable.

Just to point out alot of these DNS servers are in nuclear fallout bomb shelters, and more often than not would live longer than any human.

I was wondering, attacks on the main 13 DNS servers aside, is there a scenario where the .com's and .net's could be more affected that the countries?

we use .co.uk - our choice was purely based around the fact that a nuke could wipe out .com's and we would take everyones business :D :D :D

.PH domain for the Philippines is sold at 35 US$ solely by one registrar, and that is www.DOT.ph . If ever you find another registrar that sells .PH either they're a partner or a reseller of www.DOT.ph . Can ICANN deregulate the sale of this .PH ctld, just like the .US domain? www.DOT.ph has always been on controversy because of this.
