Hi guys,

New member here so be nice lol, I am wondering what skills I would require to create a gambling website (Poker Mainly)

I would like to setup a gambling site and I have an idea on the licenses etc that I require, but need to be pointed in the right direction as to what coding languages I need to get started.

Obviously the software needs to either run on Windows or web based, at the moment I only have PHP/HTML/MySQL knowledge.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Also if it would be easier to get the software professionally done what would be a rough estimate for this?

Thanks

Hey and welcome here,

besides what you have right now PHP HTML MySQL
i think you need flash to be able to make the game easy for visitors
so that coding language would be (Action Script)
for the interfaces you could hire a designer between once n a while

Most websites don't make their own poker software, way too much time and work involved.
I know of a company Mircogaming that make some of the software, other than that I am not too knowledgeable in the field.

For web-based, it'd pretty much have to be the Flash/ActionScript combo Hardlayers mentioned. If you're going the desktop route, the possibilities are fairly unrestricted. I don't do much/any desktop development so I'm not much help in that area, but I'd imagine java/C#/C++/VB any of those would be options. Do let us know when you get it off the ground. I love some Texas Hold 'em!

Thanks for the heads up about Microgaming ZanoHost, I will look into the company.

Does anyone have a rough idea on what they would charge to get me setup.

Thanks

Hi,

I only know that they work on revenue sharing + set up fees. Revenue share should be around 30-40% depending on turnover.

Do note that they only work with licensed provider.

by the way nowadays HTML5, CSS3 + AJAX (jQuerry, JS, json...) become pretty popular and as far as I know interactive games could be done using these technologies as well. So I would consider begin learning them, because those are future of the Internet/Web.

yeah, i've seen those Alex, they seem very promising.
replacing flash and any other scripting methods used to complicate websites in the past.

You know its funny that you mention that as I was just speaking with a friend of mine in the industry and he said the same thing to me about developing online games. I don't do much game development at all apart from a few small gigs (projects which I have scrapped to my thumbdrives a long time ago), but I've found that very few web developers will venture to develop an online web-based game using LAMP software stack and AJAX.

I took on a challenge to develop an online web-based blackjack game last year that used absolutely no java, flash, or action scripting. I designed the entire game in PHP and later added javascript, making it AJAX-style blackjack. Later on I got the idea to use MySQL for keeping hand-history and creating user profiles where players can log in and save games or play with friends. It wasn't the prettiest blackjack game you've ever seen and it certainly wasn't flash, but I think it worked pretty well for a web-based blackjack game.

I've seen very few AJAX games that have made any headway online, but I think users are more willing to accept new gaming concepts that steer clear of flash. If you develop it properly it may actually be faster than using flash. Although it is not the ideal gaming platform, I'll admit.

ActionScript is Very Important , using it beside php/Mysql would allow you to Create amazing things

a wise man once said: " The limits of my imagination, are not the limits of possibilities "

you could do it zillions of ways, and of course, flash isn't the best one and you can stand for what you feel or believe.
as for me, i would keep flash as my last stand.

You may want to target mobile and learn Android or Objective-c. The web has enough poker sites, so it would be hard to compete there.

Its a tough market to get involved with, but theres no reason why you couldnt build it in LAMP with a bit of time and effort.

A great start point would be to visit some similar sites in PHP and check with your skillset on which you will need help from someone else.
