Price wise and I guess customer service wise? I've never registered one and figure I would and wanted to know what exactly is entailed in it and the best place you guys reccomend.

Well personally I use www.stargateinc.com (though I believe Jorge registered hostculture.com elsewhere), but the one time I did email their support department (for something quite trivial) I got no response. However that was a while ago and they may have changed since then.

Another popular one is www.godaddy.com which seems to have a lot of recommendations.

There isn't really too much involved, just choose a domain name, fill in the info (billing, etc) and change the nameservers to the ones your host gives you (ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com for example).

You can change the nameservers through the domain control panel (on that note, I would recommend registering your domains where they give you a CP), or email your registrar and ask them to change them for you.

Hope that helps.

Price wise, I know godaddy.com is only 8.95 per year, and I have clients that use them and theyve been happy with their services.
I recommend www.000domains.com and I believe they are 13.50 per year. Their system is very easy to use and comes with a nice domain mgmt. interface.
You simply log into it and make changes, etc. to your domain.

Whatever you do leave Network Solutions (Verisign) alone.

I use GoDaddy, PairNic, and Melborne IT. GoDaddy is the cheapest but may not be the best systemwise. All three are accredited by Icann. http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

Whatever you do, DO NOT register your 1st and important domain name directly through a webhost. There have been issues with that (try getting your domain repointed to a different webhost when you cancel service with your 1st webhost). It was hell!

I am surprised that no one has mentioned http://www.namecheap.com . I have my domain registered through them and so far they have been excellent. They are an Enom reseller and have the cheapest price out there - $8.88/year

By the way, there is a better place to talk about domains http://www.dnforum.com/ It is a bb about domains only

I have about 10 names with dotster.com. Been with them for about 3 years and like the service.

i use godaddy, friendly control panel and great support (till now).

stay away from bulkregister resellers and, whatever u do, get a domain name by yourself, not from your host, even if its giving it 4 free.

Not sure what you have against bulkregister but we have used them for about 3 years now, with no problems whatsoever.

:)

so u resell 4 them right?

and if one of ur client wanna leave u can he/she change ns servers or u must do it 4 them?

i wrote a letter to BR about a domain of one of my clients at 10-Oct asking them 2 help. They replied at 15-Nov that i must be wrong cause they didnt have the domain name under them.
:D But it was too late cause i had already transfered it to godaddy LOL

they do not cotact domain owners directly. They deal only with their resellers, correct me if i m wrong.

i have lots of examples here and also in other forums 4 ppl wanna take control of their domain names registered under their names.

but that was only my humble opinion

I use stargate and dotregistrar.

Each has some features better than the other. None of the registars offer the best of all features.

I have to agree with staying as far away from Network Solutions(VeriSign) as you can.....had my first domain there, and will never deal with them again. I've tried a couple other domain providers since then(both OpenSRS) and am very satisfied with one of them, and mainly for the customer service you asked about.

The folks at MyOstrich ( http://www.myostrich.net/index.html ) are just super. Sure, it's a bit more($15) than some of the under $10 places, but the assurance and attention I've been given have been worth it. I'm very sure that if/when I ever have problems these folks will help me all they can(they HAVE; Tim even cut a vacation weekend short to come back and deal with a problem I had, which floored me!). So, the few extra $$ is not a lot when you know you'll get your domains handled well.

I've heard good about plenty of others, and many that others have mentioned here may well be worth checking into, but I'm just relaying my experience, and I definitely recommend the Big Bird folks at MyOstrich. They are excellent.

Take care....
Michael
