I currently use Moniker.com as my primary registrar, but they don't offer name services or management. So does anyone have a reliable recommendation for name hosting that doesn't also require you to register the names with them?

I'm not opposed to switching from Moniker, but they've been good to me and I have no complaints with them.

After reading various threads, I think I'd like to avoid hosting my DNS on the same service as web hosting.

Thanks in advance!

I suppose you are talking about domain name parking, aren't you?

Not at all - these are active domains that I also provide website hosting and email for. I currently host the DNS with the same web & email host, but I'm looking to slowly migrate away from them, and separate DNS and Web hosting as I do so.

Fair enough.

EditDNS has a nice web-based interface, and also has an option to function as slave nameservers.(ie, you provide the primary) I use them for a few of my domains.

EveryDNS I havent used, but appears to offer very similar functions, although they are part of DynDNS now.

Afaik namecheap even offers DNS hosting even if you arent their customer.

If you want to run the nameservers yourself, just grab a few VPS's in distinct locations, run BIND or pdns or nsd or whatever and voila. I do this for a few of my domains as well.

Or, if you want someone to manage your DNS for you completely, there are plenty of options as well.

Personally, I prefer the combination of a primary that I run, and some of the secondaries/slaves hosted by others, some by me. But ulitmately, depends on what you want..

Fantastic, thanks so much! I'm looking for primary hosting (that I prefer to manage on my own) for the immediate, but I'm always keeping an open eye for secondary hosting as well.

I came here hoping to find some personal experience recommendations, and you didn't dissapoint. Thanks again!

That is correct. See: https://www.namecheap.com/freedns

Some other popular services are ZoneEdit (http://www.zoneedit.com/) and No-IP (http://www.no-ip.com/).
