View Full Version : How would you rate this domain for a hosting company?
MannDude 04-03-2010, 04:07 PM Hey everyone,
Since I am not currently actually providing hosting at this time, I feel its safe to post my domain since it is NOT advertising it (I have no services to offer at this time).
With that said, how do you feel about Hostgasm for my domain?
What I like about it:
Easy to remember. Say it once, you'll probably remember it.
It has too many potential tag lines, such as, "The best you've ever had." or "We make hosting a pleasurable experience." (Of course, this is the type of service I want to provide for clients)
Its mildly comical, its short, and doesn't look like a generic hosting domain ( i-web-hosting123.com or something )
What I don't like about it:
Has an adult feel to it, which I don't plan on offering adult hosting.
Its likely I won't get much business from businesses. But I can live with that.
Telling people I own Hostgasm, and then having to explain what the hell it is and how its in no way 'dirty' [=
Your thoughts?
devonblzx 04-03-2010, 04:13 PM I think you got the advantages and disadvantages down. It depends on who your marketing too, you might have some bad looks from true conservatives but look at GoDaddy, they are one of the biggest hosting companies marketing sex on all of their TV ads.
Cape Dave 04-03-2010, 07:41 PM When you give your 30 second "elevator" speech, it is best not to have to spend 15 of them explaining the name.
Then again, try explaining "GoDaddy" in the elevator. Point of interest. I stay away from GoDaddy. I do not want to be associated with that name in any way shape or form.
My 2 cents. Dave
MannDude 04-04-2010, 04:08 AM What is it about GoDaddy that makes you want to stay away, the name alone?
I have greatly considered changing the name, I had made a list of possible domains that I thought would be good for hosting and for some reason (At the time) felt like Hostgasm would be the best choice, as its short, easy to remember and spell, etc.
Obviously one can't enter the business with a name he/she is not settled upon, and while I don't think Hostgasm is a bad name, it simply might not suite everyone.
I think it's bad to have a name that is likely to alienate some of your potential customers. Personally, I like the name, and if I come across it in Offers, I'd definitely take a look at it. I might even tell my friends about it.
MannDude 04-04-2010, 01:07 PM What are your thoughts (everyone) on domains for a hosting company that do NOT directly specify, "Host" "Storage" "network", etc in the domain?
Think: MediaTemple, if I didn't already know what the hell it was, my first thought would be torrent or warez site, or a streaming media site that has tv shows, movies, etc on it. I would of never guessed web hosting. Yet, they're a success.
I'm aware its up to the owner of the domain to market and brand it accordingly, but what are your thoughts on that? Hostgasm just seemed to easy to market, "We make web hosting a pleasurable experience" or "The best you've ever had."
luctk 04-04-2010, 02:24 PM Personally, I think HostGasm is cheesy. Obvious and cheap joke. Bad taste too. It makes me think you were trying to be funny, some wink-wink-elbow-in-my-ribs, see-what-I-did-there sort of thing. I may not take you seriously if you are introduced to me (by means of your brand name) with a lame joke right off the bat. If the name is cheesy, what is the overall quality likely to be?
I also object to the CamelCase name. I would make it Hostgasm, not HostGasm, because I think CamelCase is stupid.
But I am very critical and old school. I guess most people will like Hostgasm. Also note that I know better than to judge a book by the cover, so I would probably disapprove of the name but still take a look at your business nevertheless. For what it's worth, I've been registering domains with GoDaddy for many years.
HTH
ROSSLO 04-04-2010, 06:18 PM Why not operate hostgasm to target a specific group of customers and take another name to target your "regular" customers? This way you would have the best of both.

Valid point. The name was actually chosen because I wanted to offer great quality service to my clients, which (at the time) seemed fitting. Trying to make a pleasurable hosting experience, one others would talk about to others about, a service that would leave you well satisfied.

I have considered this, using Hostgasm to obtain online clients and something else to obtain local clients.
Anyone else have any input?

This is camelCase. Get it? ;)
Also, he has it as "Hostgasm", which is unprofessional to say the least.
psybergaming 04-04-2010, 07:31 PM hostgasm sounds more like an adult upload site. Hostgasm for a web hosting site is very unprofessional and seems a bit immature.
Hikari 04-09-2010, 12:08 AM rarely a site says its host, its name is mostly hidden in sites it hosts, so I doubt it would be a problem
only for catolic sites, their owners wouldn't like the host due to preconception, or a kid that's building his site and must ask mom to pay the hosting bill, also due to preconception
I don't mind my host name, what I want is quality
MannDude 04-09-2010, 12:44 AM Thanks for all the responses everyone, I've had time to think about it and I do plan on changing it.
I'll probably try to sell the domain to someone interested in adult hosting.
But, for adult hosting, its a pretty damn good name... ;)

Good choice... yes for a adult host, you should be able to get a bit of cash for it (maybe)
Without question the first thing that comes to mind is Adult related content.
Sell it!
Cheers,
Dave

I second that. If you think you can market it, then go for it. Some people might not like your name, but if you target a specific industry like Adult content, you should be fine. :)

I would go with that also.
meijin 04-09-2010, 11:19 AM "Hostgasm" I don't know what to think :D
It is kind of funny for me but on the other side - question for potential customer: Would You like to have a hosting in HOSTGASM? Sounds weird and ppl may don't take you serious ;]

HAHAHA.. genius post! :D
hostgasm? sounds like what a nerd would experience in bed after while uploading his webpages!
I see what you mean by remembering the name, but the problem is that I won't remember it as a web hosting provider.. the "gasm" part would definitely stick in my mind. so, I personally think it's not a good name, cuz I wouldn't take this provider seriously.
but then again, GoDaddy is doing well, so you never know!
transformer 04-10-2010, 11:44 AM try registering for 3 to 4 letter domains for hosting company it will look better and easy to remember.
i have one domain www.uxcs.com for sale if you are interested pm me and i will send you url to sale.
HostColor 04-10-2010, 11:52 AM I think that the domain name should represent the business brand. Yo do not have the phrase "web hosting" included, but it is probably better. Do not think of GoDaddy's business at all. They are very big, they have a decent services and they advertise themselves through a commercials that promote big b..bs during the Super-bowl games. I would suggest you to draw a plan of your business and to have a very clear goals. The name would come up easily then.
madlymasterful2018 04-15-2010, 03:00 AM I don't think its that much effective. Better make it hostgram. I think this will be easy to remember by anyone as everyone knows who Gram Bell was :)
MannDude 04-15-2010, 03:06 AM As stated (I think) earlier in this thread, I have decided against using the name.
It is however for sale for cheap, see the domain name offers forum. $50 obo.
