View Full Version : Looking for a registrar

Hi. Can someone please recommend me a good registrar? I want one with the following requirements:

1) Trustworthy
2) Reliable
3) Pleasant Web interface

Let me explain the third requirement in more detail.

I will not lie, I've been with Godaddy for years because of the prices, but I am really, really sick of Godaddy. Whenever I go there to buy a domain, it assaults me with some 20 or 30 additional offers, and I wish I was exaggerating! It all takes place in the most cluttered and hideous pages ever designed in the history of civilization. I just had to manage a couple of domains there and I could hardly find what I wanted, even though I have been their customer for years (I just go in there once or twice a year). On top of it all, Flash must be the only annoying Web technology they are not using yet. Everything else is there: Javascript, pop-ups, Ajax, some more Javascript for good measure, frames, iframes, you name it. I just made the stupid mistake of opening three browser tabs inside that mayhem and my browser crashed.

Enough is enough. Someone help, please.

You can't go wrong with Namecheap.

Well, namecheap is sn eNom reseller. You're better off going to the source.

OTOH, I highly recommend name.com (http://name.com/). No flash, no java, no javascript, just an efficient panel to manage your domains. And it has free whois privacy for life, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

I would take netfirms. Although some may disagree. But I prefer their interface.

I am not sure I trust resellers. What happens to my domain if the reseller goes belly up?

On a related note, don't these two bear an uncanny resemblance?

http://www.domainsite.com/name

Not just the same design. Also, try checking availability of any domain on those search boxes. Same Javascript applet.

How are they related, and why do they do that? Looks fishy to me. :(

I moved my domains to name.com a few months ago, and so far I've been happy.

One thing to note with name.com, though: if you use their nameservers, they redirect subdomains without entries to their ad page. You can setup wildcard subdomains to get around that, though.

Basically if all communications fail, you go and contact the actual Registrar, quite simple and painless as long as you are listed as the registrant, all nice and easy.

That's the main problem, you'll end up dealing with the parent company instead.
To be fair, though, namecheap has been around a long time now, and probably won't go away. They are ICANN registered, but never got around to switching from being a reseller.

Not fishy, they are owned by the same people. I'm not sure if they are going through an integration to combine both right now, I'd have to see if I can find their email about it to be certain, but they are definitely legitimate.

At one point they had totally different looks, but they're changing the doaminsite.com to be as feature rich as name.com. Feature rich and yet so simple.

Name.com often has coupons also to save a few cents, including on renewals at times, unlike a lot of registrars or resellers.

One other good thing about them is their dropping domains happy hour. The last hour of it their prices "drop" to ~ $2.99.I've picked up a couple of good (to me) .coms that way, even if I'm just holding them right now.

I would give NetEarthOne a thumbs up here; definitely trustworthy and reliable. The logicboxes control panel isn't the best but it is definitely better than some out there. ;)

We've been in business since 2001 and have 1.2M+ domains under management.

As it has been noted, we are ICANN accreditted and will be switching to our own handle in due course.

If you want nice pleasant web interface, then DynaDot is awesome. If you need an api, are a webhost and/or a domain reseller etc, then I would highly recommend NetEarth One.

As for GD, yeah their prices are good, on first year registration at least, and if you have a coupon code. DynaDot's renewal pricing is generally cheaper than GoDaddy's renewal pricing anyways. NetEarth's reseller pricing is cheaper than either one of the two.

Oh, and don't you just love it when the overloaded ajax on GD times out half way through doing something?

Good luck transferring out though....

My vote would be Namecheap since I've been using them for a while and they've been great. Other than that, I've surmised that DynaDot and Name.com are in the same league as Namecheap when it comes to customer satisfaction -- so I'm sure any of those 3 would make you happy.

another +1 for enom here.

although to be honest i never found godaddy as bad as other people suggest. it's mildly annoying to be assaulted with "ads" for other services... but it's also easy to ignore.

No one recommended ResellerClub. Are they still worth to use?
