Level3 and XO are two examples. AT&T is another. Not only would I consider their facilities the best but they also offer a number of sophisticated services such as local and remote (alternate data centers) load balancing, VPNs, firewalls, etc. And of course they have no shortage of bandwidth. I recall the top pick in the latest study of network latencies to be XO and AT&T. Frankly, if I was an enterprise or running a critical business I wouldn't trust colocations to much anyone else. Qwest and WorldCom are especially financially unstable (well so are most telecoms these days). Exodus, which hosts many of Yahoo's servers, has a very fast network but recently one of their data centers was knocked offline for a good many hours because the generators didn't properly turn on in an outage. Anyway, there are many middle-tier data centers out there that are excellent. New York Internet is one that is local for me. If price is again second to performance and reliability I would look around at local providers. Tour the server rooms, evaluate the quality. Not only is it a major advantage having your server close but might get better service than a cheaper, higher volume provider miles away. You get what you pay for. aarong 12-05-2002, 12:41 AM I've heard good things about peer1 [candian, but have one new center in new york]. I live very close to the Level3 security operations center and have heard good things about Level3 as well; however three people have told me Level3 likes to come up with policies at will. I'm currently with Hurricane Electric and plan to stick with them for a long long time. The only gripe I have with them is all the cabinets are pretty flimsy [you can take the door off with your hands ;)] and there are sprinklers over head...:wtf: However their network is great. 100% uptime so far [6 months for me...dont know about anyone else]. Very knowledgable staff 24/7 [they have a FreeBSD Guru around all the time, its perfect for my constant screw ups ] and people from all around are stoked when their line gets maxed out downloading from me, as opposed to all those times they were downloading from a friends rackshack box at 50Kbps :D travisbell 12-05-2002, 01:15 AM Peer1 has had 100% (not 99.9%) for 3 years now. I swear it to you. No ****. They also have AMAZING ping times, go ahead and ping www.peer1.net, I get 24-34MS times. They really have built themselves a great little network that we are seriously considering going with. I would say Peer1, ALL THE WAY. aarong 12-05-2002, 06:40 PM Originally posted by travisbell Peer1 has had 100% (not 99.9%) for 3 years now. I swear it to you. No ****. At least at toronto, couldn't get details about the NYC one since they were still bringing that one online when I was talking to sales. travisbell 12-05-2002, 06:42 PM With NYC you can get a min. of 4U's, 1Mbps. I think thats sitting somewhere around $300/month. We will be going with them soon. aarong 12-05-2002, 06:50 PM Originally posted by travisbell With NYC you can get a min. of 4U's, 1Mbps. I agree. I talked to Joe Cooper over in their NYC facility, and was very pleased with their overall customer attitude and service. I don't feel bad recommending them to anyone. |
