View Full Version : MAXCDN review
Desiguru 04-01-2010, 04:45 PM This is my review about MAXCDN (http://www.maxcdn.com/).
Content-pull: A+
The last thing I wanted was to upload all of my static files all over again to their network. But they offer a pull-zone which basically grabs the files first time from your server and then keeps it in their cache. This saved me about 2 hours of work.
gzip: A+
Unlike my last CDN (Cloudfront) they offer gzip compression which is perfect for me. In the cloudfront I spent about an hour reading on how to setup gzip :(. Definitely MaxCDN is a winner here.
Pricing: A++++
Two reasons why their pricing model is superior then Amazon's cloudfront.
1) They do not charge based on number of GET request and that alone saves tons of $$ for me
2) Can it get better then $10 for 1000GB of bandwidth for a whole year!
Network B+
This is the only thing I don't like. They do not have any locations in Asia where majority of my traffic come from.
Support. A+
Honestly so far I haven't had to call them or send them an email for anything so that's a good thing in my book so far.
Company: N/A
They are backed by NetDNA (http://www.netdna.com/)which is relatively new player in CDN market but so far they are doing pretty good job.
Integration: A++
Checkout how many products (http://www.maxcdn.com/integrations.php) they support
Let me know if you guys want to know anything else about them.
minhmeo 04-02-2010, 12:18 AM MaxCDN also is great with me, i'm using MaxCDN for my Wordpress blog
VAPOR-VMGamer 04-02-2010, 03:49 AM Hmm, a month ago I wanted to sign up with them, but at that time they didn't have PayPal payment method. I emailed them, but no reply until now. The good news, now they have added PayPal payment method.

No its anycast DNS system. Google does this a lot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anycast
It makes you seem like the IP is located in LA but via DNS routing it takes you to the closest location. It's the most cleaver idea for hiding data-centers.
Good started this since day 1 pretty much.
I can vouch for MaxCDN. Got a sponsorship from them and been using them for about a month :)
Vamsii 04-11-2010, 03:56 AM I am using it currently..I am happy with it..but only problem is they dont have any nodes in Asia ATM.
Timelord_ 04-13-2010, 07:17 PM I cant even get them to answer an email, or address a live chat....
Sanma 04-18-2010, 06:02 PM Thanks for the review, i'm about to sign up with them right now to test them.
@Timelord: The live chat support wasn't online the 2 times i wanted to ask, but i left an email and got the reply in less than 12 hours for both mails. (Don't remember exactly how long)
Let's see how it works =)

Trust, but always verify.
One way is to find a number of proxies around the world and look from there. Or, use looking glass servers.
From Asia, there is no difference with the speed.
Also, maxcdn do not honor their money back guarantee. So, think twice before you sign up.

Yep, me too. This stopped me from registering on their promo.

Hello, when are you trying to connect to live-chat? I'm available on chat From Midnight until 8-8:30am PST. If you're having trouble connecting to live chat, please email me directly on kbaldwin@netdna.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Vancouverdude 08-05-2010, 09:43 PM We've been using NetDNA to host images, etc. for sitepoint.com and would recommend them.
cheae 08-17-2010, 06:14 PM Yep, me too. This stopped me from registering on their promo.
I should have checked this thread before signing up with them.
I signed up with them few hours ago. They took the payment for the recent promo and the signup page said i'll receive a registration email shortly. None for the past 3 hours. Tried to contact them through online chat no response
Emailed their support, not even an automated message saying they received an email.
Now emailed the two guys who left their email address here.
I never experienced anything like this. Atleast a thank you email, that they have received my payment.
Frustrating.

Hello,
If you paid through PayPal, I am sorry if your activation was a bit slower...
I just received an email, not so long ago. I think it was yours, I believe your account is active now.
If you had issues with the promo code, please contact me at kbaldwin ( at ) netdna ( dot ) com and I will make sure the promo code part is taken care of.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
Regards,
Kev

"BUYER BEWARE"
I CAN ALSO VERIFY THAT MAXCDN REFUSES TO HONOR THERE 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE, I ASKED FOR A REFUND BEFORE I ACTIVATED AND A FEW DAYS LATER I CLICKED THE VERIFY LINK TO MAKE SURE THE ACCOUNT WAS CANCELLED AS REQUESTED BUT INSTEAD THE ACCOUNT WAS VERIFIED. I ASKED AGAIN A DAY AGO FOR A REFUND AND I AM STILL WAITING. MAXCDN ALSO HAS HIDDEN FEES LIKE THE $99 FEE TO SETUP ONE LIVE BROADCAST PULL AND $299 PER MONTH FOR A SECURED VOD DIRECTORY AND $99 OR $199 SETUP. "BUYER BEWARE"
Kevin Baldwin 12-08-2010, 01:52 PM cafields,
We never refused to honor our 30 day money back guarantee. Also the setup fees are something our clients are forewarned of before making a payment.
If you requested a refund that wasn't yet issued, please beware that Credit Card refunds could take up to 15 days.
If something else is wrong, feel free to contact me or David Henzel directly. ( kbaldwin (at) netdna (dot) com )
cafields 12-08-2010, 01:56 PM IF YOU GAVE ME A REFUND IT WOULD HAVE SHOWED UP ON MY ACCOUNT HOURS LATER NOT 15 DAYS, I USUALLY DON'T ASK FOR REFUNDS BUT WHEN I DO GET A REFUND IT IS CREDITED TO MY DEPOSIT ACCOUNT WITHIN HOURS.
Kevin Baldwin 12-08-2010, 01:58 PM I see,
Can you please email me directly, or David Henzel on my or his email with your account information? We'll look into it immediately.
Regards,
Kevin Baldwin 12-08-2010, 02:19 PM Update:
I found a ticket from you 3 days ago, to which I replied asking if you may want to give the system a try before I can cancel/refund you. I think you might not have received the email?
However, your second email which was sent a few hours ago is in the billing department's queue awaiting processing. You should expect your refund later today.
Let me know and/or email me or Pmsg me here on WHT if there's something else I can do for you :)
fancypocket 12-08-2010, 02:33 PM I am still waiting for my refund too. I was told it would be refunded on 26th Nov. 2 weeks later, I cant see the amount refunded on my paypal account.

Kevin Baldwin 12-08-2010, 02:44 PM Thanks,
I forwarded it to our billing department for processing.
Sorry we didn't have the right solution for your CDN needs, and we'll be happy to see you sign up with us again whenever you feel that we may have what you are looking for!
evildon 12-09-2010, 12:34 AM MaxCdn is the best i used.
I have setup ed it with my vbulletin site and it works great.
They have good support as every mail of mine was answered within 1 hour.
I give A++ for this service
klikli 12-09-2010, 03:45 AM MaxCDN is offering a good price - but not their speed.
Their speed sometimes even slower than direct connection to my servers, both in US and Asia.
instantIT 12-09-2010, 04:01 AM Of course we do! Contact me david@netdna.com and I will make sure you get your money back!

Very nice of you, David, the VP of MaxCDN to be here around as well.
fancypocket 12-09-2010, 04:50 AM Thanks Kevin, I received my refund.
I asked for refund, because you dont have PoP in Asia yet. I surely will subscribe again when your Asia PoP is available.

That's great to know! Wait for the official vBulletin CDN plugin soon which will make life much, much easier :-)

It is probably because you are located in Asia ( I think ) However, when our Asia location is deployed, everything will change significantly.

You are most welcome. So sad to see you go, your viewers in other areas would definitely benefit from CDN service on your site, but hopefully we'll see you again soon when our Asia location kicks in.
fancypocket 12-09-2010, 05:13 AM Any idea how many locations in Asia and when will it become available?
klikli 12-09-2010, 07:45 AM It is probably because you are located in Asia ( I think ) However, when our Asia location is deployed, everything will change significantly.
I don't really think so. I've been testing the connection speed from both my server @ US & HK.
vamsi4u 12-09-2010, 07:49 AM I have been using them since almost 6 months ..they are good..
but I, hope they will add some servers in some Asian countries also before ;I switch to Voxel ( they have Asian Nodes) and my traffic is mostly from Asian countries ..and I cannot afford Akamai .
maxcdn is cost effective solution .
doughnet 12-12-2010, 04:47 PM I've used them for about a week now. They are good but I do not like the 24 hour delay to have content updated on all nodes. Trying to see if I can setup my own private CDN since I need content to spread live and avoid the 24 hour delay.
040Hosting 12-12-2010, 05:19 PM We have used maxCDN for some projects and they did their job well; had some issues with a node before but that was traced back by a firewall blockage on our side. While maxCDN is not our only CDN we use, we are happy about their support (always fast answers in the times we needed them) and a great control-panel not to mention the pricing which is very good.
Mo-chi 12-17-2010, 11:07 AM Yes, MAX CDN is great, i'm currenly using Net-DNA.
x86brandon 12-20-2010, 06:25 PM I'll jump on the MaxCDN/NetDNA fan boy wagon. I use them for 80+ GB/day of CDN services, probably not a huge customer, but not tiny either. I'm pretty happy.

24 hour delay? Did you use push or pull? It's kinda weird though.
Yash-JH 12-28-2010, 12:12 AM I compared MaxCDN with EdgeCast - I prefered EdgeCast. I got slightly better performance in California and alot better performance in Asia.
wheimeng 12-28-2010, 02:13 AM I guess that's primarily MaxCDN does not have Asia footprint.
instantIT 12-28-2010, 05:14 AM I guess that's primarily MaxCDN does not have Asia footprint.
I guessed MaxCDN is more concentrated on Northern America's network.
samyboy445 01-14-2011, 07:51 AM hhhmmm great
samyboy445 01-14-2011, 07:56 AM can you tell me the more abt this???
samyboy445 01-14-2011, 07:59 AM ohh sorry can you give me your email id please i ask you some ques abt that
dotHostel 01-14-2011, 08:54 AM This is the only thing I don't like. They do not have any locations in Asia where majority of my traffic come from.
You must be kidding. Why do you need a CDN then?
