I currently have two servers sitting with a web host in St Louis who I am leaving. I will be shipping my servers to whatever co-location company I choose in the next couple of days.

I'd like to know if anyone here has experience in shipping servers to new hosts.

Could you give me an example of the company you used to ship the servers and how much it cost you to ship to and from certain locations etc.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,

St. Louis, Missouri?

Some people drive down to the data-centers themselves.... don't know much about shipping servers but good luck :)

Yes, Missouri. I'd love to be able to drive down, only one small problem, I live in Australia :)

So I'll need to pay a comapny to ship the servers for me... anyone know of a good one and an example of costing. Also, how long did it take?

Any examples from past experiences will help.

Thanks.

Hello,

Yes, I would imagen UPS/Fedex is the biggest and probably most reputable around. Check their website out.

Where abouts do you want to ship the server to?

We have had good experience with both FedEx and UPS. Stay away from the US Postal service.

or

I could pick it up and ship it for you (I am in STL) :)

I just shipped a server from the East Coast to the West coast USA. UPS was $30 for regular delivery and $150 for 2nd day air. The colo place sent it to me Fed Ex 2nd day air and it was $60. That will give you some idea of prices. ( all prices are U.S. )

Thanks for the help guys, it has given me a good idea. Shipping doesn't seem to be as expensive as I had expected, which is good.

I'd probably be shipping it from St Louis to United Colo in San Fransisco.

I have shipped many servers next day air by UPS and have had no problems.

If you go to www.fedex.com and click on rates, you'll get a very good idea of what it will cost. A typical 1U rackmount is about 25" x 25" x 10" and 25 - 30 Lbs (sorry for the US measurements).

Your biggest challenge could be packing it. If the current coloc site saved your boxes/packing stuff it will be easy. If not, I'd be a tad concerned about how it will get boxed up.

If you're not in a huge hurry, FedEX ground will save you a ton of money. OTOH, from MO to CA will prob take 3 - 4 days.

I drove 7 hours to Fremont for mine, but thats because I'd never colocated before. My customers, however, ship theirs directly. Costs around $50 with insurance - FedEx three day ground from florida to CA. I've never had my colo's techs install a server since each time there were special needs I had to personally attend to.
