View Full Version : Cart software
Dougy 03-28-2010, 10:05 AM I've had it with prestashop.. too many little things I don't like.. and there is nothing easy to set up per-item shipping costs. I want to set a flate rate per item..
I dont want to join their forum to ask questions, I'm already a member of too many.
Can someone point me in the direction of a nice, shiny cart script that has what i want?
Dark Light 03-28-2010, 12:02 PM Have you tried Magento? Alternatively all the standard suggestions such as ZenCart, OS Commerce, etc. spring to mind.
You might be better off just searching the forum, as this topic has been reiterated over and over again, with the same sort of responses and same suggestions. :)
Hope that helps,
Dougy 03-28-2010, 12:46 PM I realize its been asked again and again, but I havent seen anything about the per-item shipping. That's the main point of the thread, I dont know which of the list can do it. :)
Dark Light 03-28-2010, 03:00 PM Checkout the aforementioned suggestions and their demo pages and see if the per-item shipping is included in that specific software. ;)

Looks like many of the other carts like CubeCart (http://www.cubecart.com/features/) and Magneto (http://www.magentocommerce.com/product/features/shipping/view) offer per-item shipping modules, just can't say if they're shiny. Someone at PrestaShop forum has code changes for a per-item shipping option, but I'd bet your better off with something else rather then going through all of that (doesn't look easy to set up)...
PrestaShop per-item shipping option -- code changes...

Dougy 03-29-2010, 07:24 AM Yeah, I saw that link you just gave me about the per-item, and i don't wanna do it.
I'll play with Magneto this afternoon.
ThatScriptGuy 03-29-2010, 11:34 AM Magento is pure crap. Don't even waste your time.
We tried to use it. We needed to charge a 5% handling fee to all orders. Guess what? Because of a rounding bug in Magento, 99% of our orders were never marked as paid (The user's total in Magento would be 51.99, but they would pay 51.98 because Magento was using two different rounding methods). The bad thing is that this bug has existed since 2008 and has yet to be fixed. Couple that with the bloated code, and the fact that it is nearly impossible to change even a simple graphic and you've got yourself a heaping pile of crap.
We switched to Pinnacle Cart and haven't looked back.
If you're looking for Free, Opencart has a boatload of features, but it's a one man operation and that one man seems to refuse to take his community's help (Pride, I guess), so who knows where the future of that cart lies.

Each to their own; admittedly Magento does have faults, though we are using it successfully for our business. We haven't encountered the rounding bug you mention, though. We did find modifying Magento to our needs fairly easy and simple, even design changes and graphic modifications were straight forward.
Magento isn't the fastest application in the world, but it is slowly getting more efficient, compared to the first releases.

WHMCS is not even in the same category of software.
ThatScriptGuy 03-29-2010, 11:50 AM I'm not criticizing you for using Magento, but the lack of support from their team annoyed us enough to switch to an alternative software. It sucked, because we had put MONTHS of work into Magento, but the rounding bug (Which is all around their forums, by the way....It only affects certain prices, which is why you haven't experienced it) that's been around for 2 years....It's just idiotic that it hasn't been fixed yet.
To each their own though.

Agreed. If we encountered that bug, we would be pretty aggravated too. We haven't ever used their support, though we have had our own problems which we have had to modify the software to fix, so I cannot say anything in that regard.
skullbox 03-29-2010, 05:44 PM I've heard mixed things about Magneto. Productcart is one I've used before. It's a pain to setup (it only runs on IIS) but once it's setup its a good cart.
JonHos 03-29-2010, 08:05 PM Have you given the support team a chance to help you with your shipping requirements.
Any cart you choose will have to be configured for your business requirements so you might as well start with the one you have.
If on the othe hand you have exhausted all options with presta shop then that's another story.
Gergely Homola 03-29-2010, 08:18 PM Magento is great if you have a good Zend developer and have some experience with Magento. I'm not sure what this rounding bug was, but I'm positive it could have been fixed in a day or two which is was probably less than porting your webshop to another software.
JonHos 03-29-2010, 09:21 PM Magento is an amazing piece of software, but the learning curve sometimes is not justified for a simple ecommerce site.
Jon
Gergely Homola 03-31-2010, 03:11 AM Yes and it needs quite a bit of hardware to run smoothly, but once it's set up, it is really nice. If I wasn't taking ecommerce seriously, I'd probably go with PrestaShop which is blazingly fast. Sure, there's no such thing as perfect software, if you need to set shippping per item, you might have to dig into the sourcecode. It can be cumbersome, but you shouldn't whine about it when using some free piece of code. (IMHO of course)
Zen Cart, OsCommerce and a whole bunch are just so out of date, I can't recommend using them at all. Still, any of those can be the best option for someone not caring for codebase...

Yes, I agree.
Magento template system is extremely difficult for Designers.
skullbox 03-31-2010, 03:13 PM What is the cost of Magento? I looked on their site and they didn't have it posted. Makes me think it is expensive...
ThatScriptGuy 03-31-2010, 03:13 PM The community edition is free.
Gergely Homola 03-31-2010, 03:26 PM The Enterprise edition does cost a fortune though. Something like $12.000/yr I think. Although the software seems to be the same, I think you pay for services mostly.

Magento Enterprise features are completely different, current enterprise version is 1.7. Community version is 1.4.0.1.
