View Full Version : Ensim resource usage
James[UH] 12-03-2002, 11:15 PM Can anyone give me a realistic figure as to what sort of resources ensim uses?
I doubt its as heavy usage as say something like webmin. But for example:
10 reseller accounts
... and all 10 users using ensim at the same time to add a site.
Spec of box:
P4 1.8GHz
1GiB memory
This is a fictional setup, but just need an estimated resource use :)

UmBillyCord 12-04-2002, 10:59 PM 1) Participants may not bump threads uneccessarily.
2) The reason no one answered this is because quite frankly it is not a good question. No one can estimate this. It is impossible. Do a search on "number of site per server", "resource use on server", etc.... it has been discussed 100s of times.
The question makes no sense, you can not estimate resource use on a server because one site could use just as much as 500, and everyone sets their servers up differently.
alchiba 12-04-2002, 11:04 PM I think he was being quite clear. What's described is a very specific and testable scenario:

I don't know the answer, however, without trying it myself. And I won't. ;) But on Ensim you can easily script this out and then watch the resources as it runs. I would imagine it would be quite a bit of file i/o but nothing the box couldn't handle with aplomb.

Whatever. I guess if you think every site you add will have the same resource parameters, then good luck to you. To me this question will have *no* common answer amongst testers. To many variables. Science class taught me that too many variables equal too many results.
Also, he is not asking for "max" use, he is asking for "realistic figure as to what sort of resources ensim uses". This use depends on too many things, each related to how busy the sites are that are added.
Like you said:

alchiba 12-05-2002, 11:55 AM Sorry, it's not impossible to come up with a realistic figure. This is done all the time in software and systems QA and something I used to do at Kodak on DEC systems back in the day.
I didn't see the word "max" used anywhere except in your post, so I'm not sure where that fits into the discussion.

Hello, can you read?
I bumped it because I needed an answer. Seen other threads being bumped so joined in the bumping fun.
Whats not so good about the question? It isnt impossible, becuase I bet someone on here has also been wondering about resource usage ensim uses when in use and found the answer. My question wasnt how many sites per server. It was, what sort of resource's does ensim use when in use. Nothing to do with how many sites per server. I even gave an scenerio, where theres 10 resellers adding a site at the same time.

I asked for the ensim resources, I dont care if the rest of the system is bogged down. I specifcally said ENSIM USAGE.
I also didnt say how much resources will those sites added will use. I said ensim usage while ENSIM is in use.
Jesus.
UmBillyCord 12-05-2002, 03:49 PM Hello, can you read?
Apparently you can't. Do you read rules? This was an unnecessary bump. People had plenty of time to answer it. No one did. Ever wonder why?
With the vast amount of knowledge on this board everyday, you got a reply from someone who said it could be done, but then provides no other answer or reasoning how other then vague buzz words.
Maybe I am missing something. But from what I read you are asking for something that again, has too many variables. Ensim is appliance software. It ties into your entire web hosting service suite. From Sendmail to Named to etc.... Ensim is not some single process called "Ensim" that has one location to record resource use. Are you taking Ensim in regard to its scripting language python? Are you taking about PostGRE database use? Named running? How about I add a site requiring JSP? I could go on. This is my point. When you add a site, a lot is done. Most has nothing to do with "Ensim" other then it is the vehicle to drive the execution. It is the same open source software other CPs use.
Another example... What is the resource use on a BMW? - What model? Gas Mileage? Horsepower? Torque?
I will bow out. Sorry if you were offended, but I see too many things possible in this question. Hence your lack of replies.
Jesus.
Sorry, that is not my name.
alchiba 12-05-2002, 04:18 PM James,
You can use Ensim's command-line interface to accomplish just about anything you can do with the GUI. Most of these commands are in /usr/local/lib and include commands such as AddVirtDomain and AddVirtUser. Both of these accept a rather lengthy set of arguments to create a full account on your Ensim server. There may be a couple more commands needed to do this, but you might search the Technical Manual on Ensim's web site for more help.
My earlier point was that you could build a shell script (or scripts) that would simulate creating Ensim accounts using these command line tools. You could then track the resource consumption as they run with top.
An alternative way is get 10 friends and. . . well, you know. :)
Clearly, this isn't the answer you're looking for but it does point you in the direction of one. You might also ask at the Ensim forums at rackshack.net. There are some pretty sharp folks there and it's relatively flame-free.
Good luck.

O plz, cut the arrogants.
I asked a simple question, that can have a simple answer. Yes OK it was a bit brief. But all I wanted was a brief answer.
I am aware of how a process works, so dont try and teach me. if you want to cocky dont post and look at yourself in a mirror, your type of crap posting is not accecpted. It gets ppls backs up and maks the boards a rubbish resource.
Comparing a BMW to Ensim obviously shows an extreme, un heard of lack of knowledge in the field of cars and general knowledge.
Ditto your not Jesus, I am.
If you want to carry this further PM or e-mail me.

How unfortunate. Another cry baby resorting to attacks. You should learn English. Your rambling was hard to follow. Cheers.
<edit> Come to think of it, my long winded reply isn't even worth it. So I will remove it. </edit>

1) Don't bump your stupid questions. No one answered because it was a retarded question. What do you hope to accomplish anyway with the results. For someone who "aware of how a process works", you sure are missing the boat. Were you planning on bumping every day? Saved you the trouble.
2) Ensim vs. BMW. Sure it was a reach. But sometimes people get hurt feelings and are blinded by them so they need things to be dumbed down. Look at your reply. Rediculous.
My reply was as simple as possible in an attempt to explain why you don't see any standard replies. I stated there are too many variables. Sorry you are so sensitive.
Learn English. What..are you 10? Seems like I run into one of you a week. Sorry you are so sensitive. :bawling:
Really? I thought your question did that. Figured dumbing it down would help.
Great. Someone claiming to be Jesus. Can you tell me what brings down these boards again? I figured someone claiming to be Jesus would be an example.
Now if you want, you can ........... No save it.
XD
This is gonna last a while I can sense...
Can you stop talking down to me like I am 10. I am really 121 and have to be injected everyday with "Keep Alive Drug 2"... No really.
I really do think you should sober up, then read what you have said. Your talking like a rich well educated batcheler (spelling) whos drunk on sherry.
Im not missing the boat, im missing your sanity.
"Learn English. What..are you 10? Seems like I run into one of you a week. Sorry you are so sensitive"
No, this is a forum, not an English exam, go figure.
Yes, I am Jesus. James is my earth alias.
When I said to carry this via e-mail or PM. I actually it to stop flaming and filling the bored with posts unworthy the forums b/w.
/me waits for the next pointless reply
alchiba: I'll have a post on the ensim forum, see what they have to say :)

Dont worry, its captured in my post. So we can all see how daft you are.
UmBillyCord 12-05-2002, 08:27 PM Funny. My post was edited at the same time you came back with the witty reply.

Oh... thats quite alright. It is the truth. I will not even comment on your replies. What I can make out, you still are in 10th grade. How was school?
PS - I will stay out of the RS Post. Yeah... I post there often as another user. I really look forward to it though. ;)
James[UH] 12-05-2002, 08:35 PM RS post? :/
BTW, what is the 10th grade, being from the UK of all places I am not fimilar with Amercian terms.
O, btw as for the witty reply comment you made, suprisngly I dont sit at the forum and hit refresh 24/7. I do other things, such as sit on IRC, I mean I wouldnt venture outside...

Somone recommended you post this on the Rack Shack forums. Since you do not read or write too well, I can see how you missed it.
This would be a good place to put this request-
http://forum.rackshack.net/forumdisplay.php?forumid=29
There are only a few thousand Ensim Server users using RS. Take care Mate.
James[UH] 12-05-2002, 09:16 PM I read someone posted about rackshack.
Can you stop nick picking at little mistakes. Makes you sound very childish, and not me.
