=================
GoDaddy.com and Network Solutions have discontinued their domain name registration activities in China in the wake of stepped-up requests for detailed information on customers. The news came to light earlier this week in Congressional hearings focusing on Google's decision to stop censoring its search results there -- and the subsequent fallout from that decision.
GoDaddy said it received demands for additional information about its existing customers, along with a new mandate that it provide this data for all new customers.

Yes, there's a thread or two about this in the lounge, but I don't mind repeating that it's actually China (CNNIC) that has suspended overseas registrars since January, and not the other way round.

I use OpenSRS for domain registrations and they discontinued .ch registrations in January over the documentation requirements from CNNIC.

Providing detailed information on customers would have been expensive. There is likely to be a big decline in .cn registrations in a few years.
