View Full Version : Virus from visiting a website....
Rewdog 12-03-2002, 08:29 PM I just got a javascript virus that implanted itself into the Search page of internet explorer. Every time I hit Search in IE, 50 popups come up...
Beware... I'm not sure when I picked this up and I haven't downloaded anything lately...
mind21_98 12-03-2002, 08:32 PM I would upgrade IE immediately. There was likely a security hole in the version you're using that caused the virus to work. Also, increase your security level as well. Other than that, I would run a virus scanner just to be safe.
IGobyTerry 12-03-2002, 08:38 PM Rew, to change it back I think this should work.
Go into regedit. Go to HKey_Local_Machine. Software. Mircosoft. Internet Explorer. Search.
If the URLS are not;
For custom search - http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm
search assistant - http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm
Than that you should try changing them to that.
That is if you're using Windows 98/Me.
Rewdog 12-03-2002, 08:41 PM Thanks!
Synthetic 12-03-2002, 09:14 PM I am experiencing a similar problem, I went into regedit and did the changes, but nothing has changed.
I have this program called "Xupiter" on my computer. Can't seem to get rid of it... I even used their uninstaller, it didn't do anything.
I think you can get rid of Xupiter by using Ad-aware. Just a guess though.
Synthetic 12-03-2002, 09:33 PM I run Ad-aware every night. :D
progex 12-03-2002, 10:06 PM Or just keep your antivirus on "auto".
I have come upon a few website in my surfing life with malicious scripting implemented with a virus. But fortunately, my handy Norton's Antivirus stopped them from activating. :)

akashik 12-03-2002, 10:13 PM webpage viruses are one of the nastiest of them, generally exploiting a javascript issue. I had a major bank that was defaced try to feed me one once. And Norton saved me as well :)

I get those Virus alrest often too.
That's actually a javascript to setup your homepage to their website wichout asking you, that's all.
McAfee and Norton scanners fight against these javascripts.
cactus 12-03-2002, 10:55 PM If you surf and download free software a lot, then I highly recommend ZoneAlarm www.zonelabs.com it's a firewall for your computer. Prevents any software/scripts from getting into your computer and those already in prior to using ZoneAlarm.. Jail them inside your computer.
They have a free version that should suffice to protect your computer but not sure now. anyway, if you can't get it at their site, search www.download.com for it.
ZoneAlarm will notify me via a popup window if any software is trying to access from/to my computer and I usually dis-allow it, for example Netbios, Gator, etc.
From my ZoneAlarm logs:
Block Intrusion:
61 Intrusions have been blocked since install. 52 of those have been high-rated.
Inbound Protection:
The firewall has blocked 28 access attempts.
Outbound Protection:
8 programs secured for Internet access.
Email Protection:
Mailsafe is currently active. 0 suspect email attachment quarantined.
The above is for my computer & emails(Outlook Express) and added protection with Norton Antivirus installed..... I will cut it short here.
Looking at the log files one sometimes wonder what would have happened if you didn't protect your computer/mail clients???

In the years I've had virus and firewall protection, the reports scare the fudge out of me, to think what might have been shaken loose without them there on a personal computer. That same fudge becomes a landslide when I get the server sys reports each day on what tries to attack a live server designed to server webpages. :D

Neo3Net 12-03-2002, 11:12 PM Xupiter is a pain in tha butt. I had it and AdAware doesn't take it down :(
But I have the solution to it. :)
Go to http://xupiter.com/uninstall.exe
Yes its that easy :)
Neo3Net 12-03-2002, 11:16 PM Also, if you tried it and if didn't work, make sure that you close all your open IE windows, It took me like 100 times to figure it out :)
Thanks
Lippy 12-03-2002, 11:19 PM Most javascript viruses are simple ones, mostly re-directing homepages, or setting up popups and such
The Dude 12-03-2002, 11:35 PM Yes,
AD-AWARE is very usefull, but sometimes it deletes stuff your computer needs to run,for instance KAZAA you cant delete that stuff,or kazaa wont open!! :(
The Dude :)
tazzy 12-04-2002, 06:20 AM Hello,
http://www.k-lite.tk , Kazaa without the spyware or adware :D
platinum 12-04-2002, 06:50 AM It's more activeX (microsoft :D) rather than javascript that causes all the problems, I once had a search engine take over a heap of stuff, it was a real pain...
But I, like everyone else here, use adaware - actually havn't run it for a while, thanks for reminding me ;)
Rewdog 12-10-2002, 04:15 PM I got it again! grrr.. so much for updating to IE 6 which I hate.
findthewebsiteyouneed.com or whatever is the site to look out for
