View Full Version : Web based email
DoobyWho 12-03-2002, 08:15 PM What are some good web based email systems? I need to install one for a client. It needs to work with either sendmail or qmail, would be nice if it gave each user the ability to see a quota bar or something so they know how much space they have left to use. Also, the accounts need to be able to use the web based system or a pop3 client (outlook, eurdora, etc etc) so the accounts need to be actual pop3 accounts. Another feature that would be nice, but isnt required, is the ability to integrate with PLESK so that existing pop3 accounts will show up in the system already.
I've looked at squirrelmail and it was a butt to install, i'd like to see other options.

- Neomail
- Horde
Are good ones.
DoobyWho 12-03-2002, 08:25 PM Ya. We have IMP/horde installed , it comes with PLESK, our client doesnt like it tho.
Milemarker 12-03-2002, 11:24 PM squirrelmail is good also
jolly 12-04-2002, 06:42 AM squirrelmail and horde.
Try neomail its good.
:D
platinum 12-04-2002, 06:55 AM Hmm, i've used quite a few..
I use neomail, it's really simple to use... horde is a bit over the top for just checking email ;)
squirrelmail was also quite good... but I don't like squirrel's so there! :D
There was some one i've forgotten the name of, it had a cat in it :p - but I didn't like that either, looked weird and had weird ways of doing things..
NexDog 12-04-2002, 07:01 AM Squirrelmail is a great system. We have it custom installed on our Plesk servers. If you want, PM me and I will put you in contact with Plesk/Squirrelmail specialists who install it for a mere $30 per server.
apollo 12-04-2002, 05:13 PM my vote goes to horde ;)
NexDog 12-04-2002, 07:25 PM IMP 2 that comes with Plesk sucks big time. IMP 3 is better...
NexDog 12-04-2002, 07:27 PM DoobyWho, give me some time to out the email address....
Lamont 12-04-2002, 08:49 PM I've used horde and, unless it has other skins, it's just plain UGLY.
I like SquirrelMail.
Selpaw 12-04-2002, 08:51 PM Horde/IMP is the way to go. Second best is SquirrelMail.
NexDog 12-05-2002, 12:11 AM LOL, that's why we replace IMP with SquirrelMail at our own expense. I haven't tried out IMP 3 but IMP 2 is simply poo-poo.
I recently purchased and installed HiveMail from www.hivemail.com . It is really quite impressive, and the next version due out in a couple of days (1.1) is going to have tons more in features.
Take a look. I think you'll like what you see.

NexDog 12-05-2002, 09:16 AM Yep, heard great things about it too. :)
CareBear 12-05-2002, 09:34 AM There was some one i've forgotten the name of, it had a cat in it :p - but I didn't like that either, looked weird and had weird ways of doing things..

DoobyWho 12-05-2002, 01:09 PM Vito - We looked at hivemail a few days ago and it won't work for us. It does not create POP3 accounts. So the users cannot connect to their email via a pop3 client. In fact, visit the following link to see our thread to them.

It's a great software package, but not one that will work for us.
Oh, that was you? I saw that thread. And BTW, those were in fact "good pre-sale questions".
Sorry it won't work for you. I have no problem with it. I recently set up a new site where I offer free web based email and free classifieds to a local community. It works perfectly for me.

DoobyWho 12-05-2002, 05:18 PM Thanks.
Ya, it looks like a great system! I hope it works well for you!
