View Full Version : What is the name server?
igloe 03-24-2010, 11:26 PM I'm currently being hosted on a friend's server. My site will be a subdomain of his (me.hisdomain.com). I have a domain that I would like to point to my site but both of us are unsure what nameservers to enter in my domain control panel.
I tried using the same DNS that hisdomain.com is using but it didn't work. I don't have cpanel, what can I do in this situation? Thanks a bunch!
jordanriane 03-24-2010, 11:28 PM Are you using me.hisdmoain.com (eg: you'll access your site as that subdomain URL) or do you want to use yourdomain.com?
If you want to use yourdomain.com, you need to have him setup yourdomain.com as an add-on domain. That is the only way that it will ever work; Without setting it up, your domain won't propagate as it doesn't exist on the server the nameservers resolve to.
You will then use the same nameservers that he is using for hisdomain.com.
Edit: See http://cpanelguide.net/addon.php for help.
igloe 03-24-2010, 11:35 PM mydomain.com is already set as an add-on domain. However, even though I changed nameservers to the same ones as hisdomain.com, it doesn't propogate.
We checked using CMD and mydomain.com still points to the old IP address.

We've waited, it's been 48 hours.
jordanriane 03-24-2010, 11:40 PM What's your domain name that isn't propagating for you?

Well, right now the server is down anyway. I hope you can understand that I don't want to give out my domain just yet for privacy reasons (or until I can afford the ID protection).
I just was hoping there was a way I could solve it without having someone directly look at it for me.
jordanriane 03-24-2010, 11:47 PM Just a little paranoid there. You can just PM me the domain name and let me know when the server is back up.
Or you can just use proxy websites to try to access your site to ensure that your ISP isn't the problem (if you haven't tested out on other ISPs or proxies already.)
Theoretically if he created the add-on domain in cPanel and you're using the correct nameservers, your site should resolve to the server after it propagates. Kinda hard to really tell what the problem is just by that.
You can also check http://intodns.com when your site is back up to see if there's some DNS issues on the server it's on that's causing the resolving issue.
igloe 03-24-2010, 11:57 PM Thanks so much for the help. The server will actually be down for a while, but the intodns.com looks like it will provide better info for me. If not I'll be back later. ^^
rlxsystems 03-25-2010, 08:20 AM Sorry to say for those folks that think cpanel is the solution for everything it cannot help you understand how DNS works. It might provide some sort of decent enough interface to manage your DNS records but beyond that you still need at least a basic understanding of how DNS works.
When you register a domain with a registrar you specify the NS records through your registration. NS (Name Server) records are the records that assign name servers for the domain.
After you have assigned NS records through your domain registrar you can then set the domain up on the name servers you specified. You will also need to setup A records on your name servers for the NS records you assigned through your registrar along with any other A, MX, CNAME etc... records that you want or need.
Hope that helps.
jordanriane 03-25-2010, 12:43 PM @rlxsystems -- Is your post specifically aimed towards my responses or just a general response? If aimed at me, rather rude considering I never said that the issue would be resolved by cPanel itself.

No sir. My response was not aimed at you it was just a general response from all the posts I have seen related to cpanel on WHT. Sorry for the confusion.
jordanriane 03-25-2010, 01:48 PM It's Ma'am. :)

Well I just seem to keep putting my foot in my mouth don't I? Please excuse me. I am usually more on top of things. I must be slipping.
