Has anyone here got any experiences with the above streaming media servers? We're currently in the midst of implementing an multi-server setup for a client that currently streams (VOD and MP3) via progressive HTTP, but wants to implement RTMP and HTTP pseudo-streaming.

They currently streaming some livecasts through a fairly unreliable CDN (they get poor performance outside of the US), but will be migrating to this platform after further testing. However, does anyone know which of the above three server softwares is generally the best at "mirroring" live streams to servers in a cluster in terms of delay/lag?

We've been working with Flash Media Server for some tests, but it seems to throw a bit of a fit when you utilize a directory tree for media (vod/media... /random/folder/test.flv). This is a bit of a pain considering the way they are currently setup. Does anyone know of a way to successfully get this working?

Thanks.

We are working on an advanced streaming project as well and went with Wowza. Red5 is very basic and FMS is very expensive; for a lot less you can get Wowza which pretty much has all the features of the 4K FMS and it has very good native H.264 support.

Cost isn't really an issue for us between Wowza and Flash Media Server, the main issue is it not falling over when we utilize directory tree file storage. Does Wowza allow for this?

Neva Digital- Yes, it should allow for that.

I have never used Wowza before but I have Flash Media Server, and I found it extremely cumbersome. I would go with what Shikhir A said and try Wowza first!

Each have their own pluses and minus
FMS is better for live streams and under heavy loads
wowza is a bit more fliexible with apps and structure.
it can get bogged down on connect time

I have tons of experience with Wowza and over all I like it. There are a lot of little tricks to get higher throughput and some things to avoid that cause the service to run high CPU.

But, Once you learn it, it runs very well and can push some serious traffic.:agree:

We've been running on Wowza for some time now, and are happily pushing over 6GBIT/s through it. :)

How are you pushing 6000Mbps?

Can you provide more details about your setup? Are you using multiple servers or multiple ports on same server?
Currently aware of a maximum of 1000Mbps per server.

Also, if using multiple servers are you using a special application architecture or is this a total for different applications?

We currently have many, many, many servers. :)

Edited! To elaborate on the setup, we've got some proprietary live delay software running on an origin/edge setup, with a globally distributed edge node array.

Hi RSanders,
I found your post through Google. We are in fact trying to implement wowza but are having problems with very High CPU usage. Are there any tricks to solving this.
We are running Wowza on a VM, with 4 cores and 8 Gigs of Ram. CPU goes up to 95-100% after about 150 connections...

We are currently pushing 4Gb/s out of one Wowsa instance, and have been very happy with the performance. Overall it has been a great product.

I would not run something as CPU, network and I/O intensive as Wowza on a VM, the overhead of virtualization might impact performance alot on high usage on virtualized systems. That might be part of your problem.

Also did you modify your wowza config so it can scale properly to your hardware ? The default config is not designed for high performance, but more to run on every type of machine. Check the guides on their site to optimise your installation, it can make a huge difference in performance.

Hope taht helps, and good luck.

red5 - at least old version was not able to push good enough quality streams.
wowza - no multibit streaming
FMS basic - good
FMS "big" - has features that not too many businesses need (at this point of time)

Hi. I want to advise you to look at erlyvideo.org It is a fully-featured media streaming server, that can work with RTSP, RTMP, MPEG-TS protocols, delivering video to flash, STB and iPhones.

It is known to handle up to 4000 simultaneous connections. Take a look at it. Contact info@erlyvideo.org if you wish.

Can you tell me more about using. I know, erlyvideo is used, but I lack statistics about usage.

Hiya All.

Just found this thread on google and though i would join in.

We are running Wowza Pro on a Quad Core 2.6 with 8g's or Ram.

The system has be slightly customized for our useage with our STB's.

We are having an issue with huge CPU usage and Java then making the picture jump, freeze and skip. The CPU usgae causes issue when it reaches around 40%. I am using "TOP" to get these figures.

Regards
Liam
