View Full Version : Who's best for co-location?

travisbell

Hi all, I am *this* close to co-locating some of our servers at United Colo, but I was wondering if anyone else can recommend any other companies that offer great co-locating options.

Thanks to anyone who replies!

I would recommend www.servercentral.net

If you don't mind paying more for BW, but have great support, bw, uptime, and facility Ventures Online is wonderful to coloc with

http://www.venturesonline.com/

When venturesonline says for bandwidth "Calculated on average total usage", you wouldn't happen to know how much that actually is would you?

;)

Depends what kind of colocation you're looking for, i mean united colo (no offense to them, but theres no other way of really saying this) seems really "bottom of the barrel", personally i'd never send a server to a place like that after hearing horror stories of other low end companies giving people no end of grief over returning of servers, etc. You should be prepared for a fairly signifigant price gap between the bottom end mega transfer hosts, and a reasonable host that doesen't oversell its bandwidth to such an extent.

Fair enough. Anybody ever use WholesaleColo (http://www.wholesalecolo.com/)?

didn't they go under a few months ago?

travisbell

Nope, looks like their still alive and kicking. They were bought out by Webhosting.net though...

I dunno...

I have a colo at UnitedColo and I would recomend them. I bought my server off of Ebay and sent it to UnitedColo. It never worked right from the start and they were very understanding and profesional about dealing with my problem child. After they checked everything I asked and the server still wasn't functioning properly I had them send it back to me. It was sent back to me with no problems. I finally figured out it was the mobo, replaced it and sent it back to them.

UnitedColo has a LOT of bad press on WHT

for 100% network uptime, go with Internap! Since our move with Internap, we have not even had a single second of network downtime! Though it's much more expensive, now we can sleep at nights :)

We use http://rackforce.com for dedicated, and if they are as good with colocation as they are with us now, they would be great to use.

We are also looking into http://atjeu.com for colocation because they are local and seem to have a good reputation.

Both of these places are on the more affordable end of the spectrum.

I can also say that VO has been very good to us with all of the servers we colocate with them. And yes, their bandwidth is more expensive than United Colo, but its quality bandwidth, and they have a very quality, fully redundant network inside of their facility. I sleep easy at night, which is worth everything to me. :)

Only problem with united.colo is frequent downtime.

Personally I don't much care for their marketing tactics either. They are borderline enough that they are the main reason we decided to not go with them when we had a test box with them.

Wow thanks for the input guys.

Here's our situation.

We are currently leasing our servers from RackShack. Love them to death, good support fast network...

But we did some rough numbers with for example, using United.Colo, and we'll save around $1000 a year by doing Colo (atleast with UC).

The point of us moving is to save money and spend it on more machines. So, if I am gonna end up spending $100+ a month on Colo, we might as well just stay with RackShack.

Some opinions?

If you are happy with RackShack, I would stay there. UCG has always had major problems. RackShack, despite their low pricing, has always had a fairly stable network. Keep in mind that RackShack is an established, profitable company. Who knows where UCG is going to be in 3 months.

In the grand scheme of things, $1000 isn't all that much, especially when you consider that you will have to buy a server, ship it out to UCG, and then take the time to transfer all of your sites over from RackShack to UCG. A decent server alone will probably cost you $1000, plus then you are also responsible for all hardware issues. That means if anything breaks, you will have to pay for the part and pay UCG to put the new part in for you.

Interesting.

I'm currently co-located with Defender Hosting (defenderhosting.com) and I guess my only complaint is that my two servers can't physically upload/download as fast as Defender would allow them to. I love these guys...

Good luck!

Wow, I have been on and off the phone, and sheesh it been busy. Here's where I am at, Peer1 looks the best. 100% uptime for 3 years, nice staff, FAST network.

Still looking though, DefenderHosting look alright, just emailed em. Whats with the no-product page, or even website?

A quick question, any of you have any eperience with Internet Express (http://corp.ixpres.com/host/colocation.asp). They look alright, look being key word.

Thanks again!

Rackshack doesn't exactly have a 'stable' network...just look at their forums to see how many times they've needed to done router maintanence(sp?) over the past few months. Though the outages are short they occur too often for my liking. And each re-routing seems to make latency worse and worse, one reason i'm moving to ThePlanet.

EDIT: If United.Colo didn't have quality a quality He.net and Internap mix I wouldn't have 3 corporate servers with them (not the cheesy $49 ones, I'm paying $600/mo total.) Im about to purchase my 4th one and am looking at a possible 5th one next week.

I'll throw my vote in for http://rapidcolo.com They are part of Vortech Hosting. We've been extremely happy with their service and support. Pricing is fair and te network is rock solid.

That through me off too, but for some reason Tom seemed like a good guy and he was very honest. He answered every question I had and he was very helpful.

I had been with my old host for a long time and they screwed me over so badly with pricing and downtime; it was terrible...

So I had my servers shipped overnight air or something and UPS drops one of them! Tom instantly called me and told me what was going on and we figured out a smart solution instantly.

It's been 4-5 months now and I have no complaints whatsoever.

Rock on!

This is a very good summary of RS. One other thing that bothered me about RS was the attitude of customer service and support personnel. They are either indifferent or arrogant. Basically their attitude is "We have 10,000+ servers...This is what we offer...Take it or leave it."

I would hardly call what UCG has a "mix". It's almost completely HE.net with a rare InterNAP route. At the prices they charge there is no way they can afford InterNAP.

UCG's "Network Infrastructure" page is misleading and inaccurate. They buy all their connectivity from wworks.net.

I strongly dislike providers that over exaggerate or blatantly lie about their connectivity.

travisbell
12-04-2002, 02:03 AM
Interesting, I did not know.

i do have to admit though, I have had ZERO problems with RS and their support. Their prompt and easy to deal with.

Just my opinion :)

mushrew
12-04-2002, 03:14 AM
I'd have to disagree with Internap being a rare part of the mix, though it isn't an even one vs. HE. I'd say it goes in about 33% of the time according to my tests (i've done many since i use my machines for game servers.) HE is still good bandwidth though and I really don't have any complaints.

I don't like how they lie about the bandwidth (never did - I used to hate UC a lot) but they've gotten a lot better and I really don't mind the inconsistencies on their website with what they provide.

I think the 'best' solution for co-lo is too much of a personal question to be asking in public. :D

It really depends on what kind of solution you're looking for, how much bandwidth you 'need', and what quality of bandwidth and support you can afford.

We had a need for a cheap 'testing' server with as much bandwidth as possible, so when KingComp came along it was a good option.

I've got a thing about Rackshack, and the way they operate, but they are a very good solution for alot of people.

When UnitedCoLo first offered their $49 servers, it was a price that was too good to refuse, but again, you get what you pay for. But things there may be looking up, but there are still a few issues.

We've recently revised what we are trying to achieve (performance, quality and uptime as opposed to large amounts of data and the cheapest prices possible), and ThePlanet's co-lo prices, combined with their network and support, is ideal. But there is a trade off if you really need that 500Gb/m data, but because we don't need that amount of data transfer we're going to end up saving money anyway. :)

Just my 2c. ;)

People spamming to sell an anti-spam product? Now thats ironic, i'd love to see that in court, you could argue that they're driving up the market for it and nail em on two illegal activities

hahahaha, that really would be great!

So in the end, after 39 replies, I have decided that after christmas, we'll be going with Peer1. Not only do they seem to have a wonderfully quick and exceptional network (100% uptime over 36 months, and 20-30ms ping times) the customer service was wonderful.

Thanks to everyone and their quick responses and good suggestions.

Peace!
