Hello,
We are going to lunch a domain registration business by end of this week, we are kind-of too much confused with starting price of .com/.net tld's.
Finally, we end up deciding to provide the service at $6.99 for regular clients and $5.99 for priority/vip clients.
I was wondering, if you guys can tell me what the cheapest registrar you know around so we can think twice about lowing down the price =)
Note: Please do not message me about asking the website address etc, follow my twitter account- @ahmednitul ~ I'll post the link as soon it's ready =D
Best wishes,
Ahmed Nitul.

It's below registry price if you plan to offer that for .com ... If you are looking for long term customer relations i suggest you be honest with your customers and call it a promo and also tell them what it will cost afterwards. From my perspective domain name business is related to trust. So asking a bit hereticaly: Why should I prefer you over a company I've been doing business with for 6 years?
The cheapest i know for .com is the current ResellerClub Promo for new .com registrations @4.99 (limited till 03/31/2010)

Godaddy advertises domains as low as $1.99 not sure what you have to do to get that price though.

Your price is good already. More importantly, just make sure you don't make a loss.

Domains are usually available at cheaper rates only during special Godaddy promotions and not through out the year.

And they are always running some kind of promo.
Ahmed, I will suggest you to do the calculation again. If you are selling at loss, how long will you be able to sustain your business. Also why will someone buy the $6.99 domain if he can get priority/VIP status with you by paying less.

Are you guys accredited? Are you intentionally selling domains as a loss-leader type thing? As others have mentioned, at $5.99 your prices would be the lowest 'regular' price out there... but places like godaddy and yahoo do occasionally sell domains at a loss as well.. but usually as limited time promotions.

I don't rely domain registrars that offer too cheap prices. Because most of these companies are generally untrustworthy or their prices are unstable.

selling at loss only makes sense for a limited time. If you have this as a regular price for your customers, then you will be bankrupt quickly and your customers will face the problem of having to move the domains to the next registrar. Offering cheap is okay, but make sure you cover your costs and that you tell you customers upfront if it is only a promotional price.

It does not make sense to have only $1.00 between VIP and regular clienst. I would suggest to make a larger distinction. Secondly, be sure to call it a promo AND to mention the renewal fee for the next year.
Good luck!
