Somebody just recommended to me to get an SSL certificate from qualityssl.com. Does anybody have any experience with their certificates? $25 a year sounds too good to be true.

I see that comodo.net offers them for $49 which is almost twice as much what qualityssl.com offers. How come? Are their certificates as good as the the ones from Verisign or GeoTrust? TQ Mark 12-02-2002, 03:41 PM It depends what you classify as "good". Verisign has the highest browser recognition, but the others advertise to be 98% compatible. Verisign is also pickier than others in verifying a company's identity before giving them a cert. If you are doing lots of e-commerce transactions, visitors may expect to see the familar Verisign seal. jolly 12-02-2002, 03:56 PM http://www.freessl.com/ Check if they still give free SSL. mpope 12-02-2002, 04:02 PM Also check out freessl's chained certs. They are $15/year and seem to work quite well. I purchased one last week, and have been happy with it. I made the purchase and had my cert working 15 mins later. (There is no authenticity verification) alosito 12-02-2002, 04:12 PM Chained technology? Doesn't it cause problems when used with certain browsers? alosito 12-02-2002, 04:15 PM sloop, so certificates from qualityssl.com don't work as smooth as the ones from Verisign or Geotrust? I don't really want to lose 2% of my customers because of a cheaper certificate. hostpath.com 12-02-2002, 04:31 PM I'm using certs from Instant SSL (Comodo) and have been absolutely thrilled. I've completely dropped Thawte certs, and I used to be a big supporter of Thawte. alosito 12-02-2002, 04:45 PM So compatibility of Comodo's certificates with different browsers is not an issue? I called their tech support, and they claim to be even more competable than GeoTrust's certificates. trustedurl.com 12-02-2002, 05:24 PM Originally posted by alosito So compatibility of Comodo's certificates with different browsers is not an issue? RH Robert 12-02-2002, 05:49 PM We resell Comodo Certs under our brand and haven't had any issues that I am aware of with browser compatability. I should say, no customers have brought any to our attention. have we just been lucky? I don't know, I will say we had issues with freessl, but usually only with older browsers, and even that was a while ago... haven't seen many issues recently with certs from any of the companies now. Luxore 12-02-2002, 09:20 PM I've seen compatability issues with GeoTrust & ChainSSL with some versions of IE 5.0. This may or may not be the certificates fault. I have an inkling some versions of IE 5.0 simply lack the crytography features necessary to handle modern 128-bit encryption. Zoomer 12-02-2002, 09:56 PM Actually, you can generate your own certs, but the customers would have to hit "accept" to accept the cert.z That's the difference. I don't really want to lose 2% of my customers because of a cheaper certificate. Actually, Comodo/********** announced they have a new chained root and are now more compatible than Geotrust. You might want to ask them for the details that I'm not sure about. Aushosts 12-29-2002, 09:39 PM What browsers support FreeSSL? eddy2099 12-29-2002, 09:44 PM Originally posted by SpiritAu What browsers support FreeSSL? Not too sure, they mentioned 90% compatiability. But probably IE and Netscape 4 and above I got one and it works with my IE 6.02 but then again, I am the only one using it. It probably is good enough for internal usage. For public usage, I have a Geotrust SSL instead. I think I know why FreeSSL recommended Geotrust. I just checked my Amex bill today and saw that I was billed by Geotrust ;) Cool. Same company different cert. |
