View Full Version : why would a reseller's server be down more often?

Ok so http://www.mikhailtech.com is currently hosted by http://www.meemsites.com, a reseller of RackShack servers. For some reason we're down a lot more often than other RackShack servers and it's been getting progressively worse. I will be looking into another host (in a separate thread later) but I was just wondering if anyone here knows why this might be. And it's not just downtime, it's a lot of other things too like denied permissions (can't write to devices), database errors, timeouts, email offline, or site doesn't work but FTP is still good, etc. Sux.

What does your current provider have to say about this?

They never really give me answer. They say they'll "investigate the problem" but never get back to me. By the time they get my email everything is usually working again (because email seems to go down pretty much the same time as anything else does).

If it is the case, then the problem is in their server admin.

So it has nothing to do with RackShack then?

It maybe caused by software (most likely). What control panel do you use?

Plesk.

I would recommend you to ask your provider:
1. How many sites already in the server
2. Server Specification
3. How much space left
4. Resources utilization

Just to make sure that the server still have enough resources for you. I'm sure your provider would understand.

All the best! :)

A server's uptime and peformance is only as good as the people keeping an eye on it. Rackshack servers are unmanaged, meaning is something goes pear-shaped it's up to the admins/owners of that server itself to get it back up and running - not Rackshack.

It's extremely doubtful the RS's company website shares a server with anything not directly to do with their company, so there's no chance a customer's uploaded script going rogue is going to bring down their own site.

I agree with this statement 100%. :D

A good admin can have your rackshack server up near 100% of the time (only actual rackshack downtime) ... a bad admin... anywhere between 0% and 100% ;)

Heck... you could even give a bad admin a rackspace server and you *could* see horrible uptime...

It could be two things either a sloppy server admin which is kind of what it sounds like from your problems, but then again it could be a hardware issue on rackshacks end. Sometimes its a major PITA getting someone in charge over there to listen and can take 48-72 hours to finally get them to realize "Hey I think this guy is right about faullty hardware"

But again like I said it sounds like an un-experienced admin has been playing around with chmod and myphpadmin a little too much. I would suggest asking to be moved to another server and see if it fixes the issues if you have been overall happy with the host prior to these incidents.
