CaveatEmptor 12-02-2002, 05:43 AM Hello all you posters and hosters--
As you may recall a few months I smacked around a few of you hosting companies for a variety of reasons and pointed out that a lot of you folks with your promises of good service and products are really a bunch of a wussies. Nobody was willing to offer my hosting after I mopped up the floor with a couple of regulars and brought about some truth and justice for we, the consumers.
Only one host was tough enough to seize the nettle. That was Choppy of surrenderonline. And so I would like to say Congrats, Choppy, because I am quite pleased with the service I've received from Surrenderonline.com and I am now a happily paying customer. I wholeheartedly endorse anybody who is looking for hosting to try surrenderonline.com

Toolz 12-02-2002, 12:42 PM Seems like everyone is too scared so let me jump in:
Bandwidth seems a bit tight - although charges for excess are fair.
Wouldn't care to give us a url would you?
BTW just looked over the old posts and I have to say well done!

You "smacked around a few of you hosting companies" and brought some "truth and justice" for "we, the consumers" ??
Thats pretty impressive. Do you wear a cape, tights, and a blue shirt with an "S" on it too ?
I'm half tempted to look up what other comic-book-inspired postings about the regular hosts you "mopped up the floor with" were...but at this point I just can't be bothered to enter your username into a search. I'm sure its fascinating.
I'm glad you are happy with your host.
Andrax 12-02-2002, 01:02 PM Did you ever get that $$ from S. Barr?
Gordo 12-02-2002, 01:18 PM For me at least, this thread has been informative.
I always wondered what happened to Walter Mitty.

Ok, where was this big challenge of yours? I'd love to see this so-called floor mopping thread of yours. :emlaugh:

Hmm, I did a search, only thing I found was some threads on getting ripped off or some **** didn't feel like reading it all.
Toolz 12-02-2002, 01:57 PM The young lad is full of himself but reading the thread he did actually do well.
It's worth reading - S Barr is quite a famous name around here and that was a hooter of a thread.
CaveatEmptor: You did get you $$$ back did you?
Choppy 12-02-2002, 06:28 PM CaveatEmptor,
Very nice of you to praise me and Surrenderonline.com it is very much appreciated and we hope to keep you as a customer for years to come.
Caveat mentioned a few hosts that could not meet his needs and many are popular ones on these boards, its not up to me to name them but there was a few.
I remember the first time i read CaveatEmptor post about not being able to find a host with guts and up to the challenge of hosting his sites. Loving a challenge i contacted him off the board if he was interested in trying us out and that we were up to the challenge.
Not my story to tell but it just came all back to me in a flash :)
I dont hand out urls either so thats up to CaveatEmptor.
Kind regards thanks again from the whole team :D
CaveatEmptor 12-09-2002, 03:40 PM Sorry not to respond to you all earlier, but SOME OF US can't be messing around on bbses all day. We got things to do, now that I have a website host.
I mean, What is you people actually do? Hmm?
Are you like, rich socialites of some sort, who swizzle olives around in your martini while reminiscing on how you made your last million? Or is all your wealth inherited and I am merely insulting you to suggest that you should stoop so low as to have a profession or go to work?
* Yes, I wear tights, fishnet stockings, stiletto heels.
* Yes, I am full of myself (admitting this is mere false modesty, to make it look like I care).
* Yes, I got my money back from young Samuel, who has promised since to walk the straight and narrow, and follow the truth path of righteousness. Once that occurred I gave up my campaign since, after all, all you other folks who got ripped off weren't exactly donating to the defense fund, or giving me free web programming or anything for me to slap him on their behalf.
And yes, I'm quite pleased with Choppy and Surrenderonline. You can see my site at www.carrierworld.com.
Full of myself? Sheesh. It's not my fault that nobody listened to my plan for peace in the middle east, or turned their nose up at my cure for cancer. I told them it was all related to diet, but would they listen?

Reality Hosting 12-09-2002, 04:11 PM Are you like, rich socialites of some sort, who swizzle olives around in your martini while reminiscing on how you made your last million?
Yes :D
IGobyTerry 12-09-2002, 04:28 PM I also could not find this so called challenege out to us, so I'm not why we all got called wussies. But whatever, the only thing I could find was your thread about Samual Barr and a few other reply's so I'm not sure where you also smacked around a few hosting companies.

CaveatEmptor 12-10-2002, 04:59 AM RealityHost--
Oh, well that's alright then. I knew you had that blueblooded look about you. Work is the curse of the drinking classes.
Inogenius--
It would be unseemly to drag the names out again. They served their time.

Toolz 12-10-2002, 07:04 AM Yep: "Full of himself"
Has talent and has some writing ability too but the boy's not a team player methinks... :)
alphadesk 12-10-2002, 07:55 AM CaveatEmptor,
All you need to do know is fix the broken .gif (lifepreserver.gif)
mccuem 12-10-2002, 08:25 AM Caveat,
I'm interested to know what the "challenge" was in finding a host. You seem to run a simple nuke site with amazon affiliation and a bunch of free ads...
Where you challenged to find a "good" host, "cheap" ?
Toolz 12-10-2002, 08:47 AM ...always gives me javascript errors as well. :)
2Grumpy 12-10-2002, 10:46 AM Nice to see someone who has some self confidence, haha to say the least.
Can't speak for anyone else but I don't pm or solicit customers off of the forums, I'll post the occasional ad in the for sale section but that's about it.
At least you found hosting that satisfies you, something many people spend months doing.
CaveatEmptor 12-10-2002, 03:47 PM Thanks for all that input on my site--grasping at straws it seems to me, but I do appreciate the input on errors.
I am quite happy Dixiesys. And it did take months.
I'm going to put another bead on this thread.
I've also been through about 20 so-called web gurus who have worked for me. They appreciate the way things look, once in a while think about whether or not something does what it was intended to do, and never ever finish the job properly. If I ever hear a web designer say those words: "Let's redesign the site," to feed their own egos about how they can make a web site work, I'm going to puke. Thank god phpnuke and these other off-the-shelf portals came along so another class of developer can be relegated to the dustbin of history.
I really can't figure you people out. The name of the game is making money not playing Quake over the Internet. It doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it makes money. I can't figure out how any of you make any money. You charge between $5 - $20 per month which means that you have at least 250 happy (ha!) customers before it becomes even worth wasting any time on. I mean it's not like it's the dotcom days anymore. Nobody's going to give you ten million because you earn fifty cents in revenue. It's a mystery to me.
Not to mention wasting time around here.
Sorry I called you all wusssies.
Snivs is more like it. Now get back to work.
'nuff said. (Exits stage left, rapping his billy club on the rows of bunks and closing the cell door with a clank).

2Grumpy 12-10-2002, 04:26 PM Actually I'm so much "not" a web designer it isn't funny, I am absolutely talentless when it comes to things artisitic, I wish I could make pretty images and stuff, but I can't, but I do know unix :) I do agree with your take on "web designers" I've only met a handful of real web designers, and the rest were hacks at best, and yeah seems like they all wanna redesign your site.
As for your comment. I brought in over 200K in revenue this year and got to keep well over 40% of it probably over 50%. I dunno about you, but that's all the incentive I need to keep doing what I'm doing.
CaveatEmptor 12-10-2002, 05:34 PM Dixiesys--
Really? That's quite good. 80 to 100 percent margins too. My hat is off to you. I thought this board was full of 12 year olds who were earning extra money to spend on crack.
Yes, Unix. Those were the days. I'm old enough to have played rogue on Vax machines and to have known some of these Internet zillionaires when they were young and hungry.

What about taxes? :)

Please don't use such language in my presence  Words such as taxes are offensive to my ears! (eyes)
Oh Unkie Sam's gonna get his bite which will definitely not be cool.
But think about it when people with "real jobs" mention salary they don't say "oh I made $31,732 after taxes" they'll say "oh my salary is $45,000 a year". I don't know what I'll have after the man gets his cut, my wife has had extra taxes taken out all year plus there's lots of deductions/etc that I haven't taken into consideration either that'll actually further erode that "profit margin".
Carboran 12-11-2002, 12:38 AM I have to give props to Caveat for his writing. I have always thought of myself as an excellent writer, but I don't have the motivation to pull something like this at an informal forum.
Just out of pure interest. Where did you go to college? Vandy by any chance?
CaveatEmptor 12-11-2002, 05:29 AM Carboran--
It's clean living. I rise at 4 from my wooden cell, throw my monk's robes--it's habit forming you know--and after some bread and water, head off with my stylus to scratch away at a palimsest. I'm halfway through the Saxon invasion of Britain and the Abbot has let us scribes use red today. I know it sounds boring but I find it all illuminating.
Dixiesys, if you don't mind me prying, do you do this just through this reselling which everybody does here, or do you have your own ISP? If so, I have something to sell you: a cacheflow 5075 Net Accelerator for a T1 network. One of my suppliers in North America is unloading one of these and looking for a buyer. Normally, as the critics who have frequented my site will have noted, I sell telecoms network transmission equipment.

NexDog 12-11-2002, 06:17 AM Gary leases server servers from various providers just as we and alot of hosts here do. But with 22 servers I'm sure he's almost ready to open his own data center, I know I would if I had 22 servers. We have 8 servers and made 100k this year and didn't get to keep any of it. Not that I care. We have 3 of us working together in one huge office on the side of my house. We have been best friends since school in the UK and now find ourselves running a fast-paced internet business together in Australia. We don't make alot of cash really - 2 people could probably run the company instead of 3 partners and 2 staff but we don't really care. We get to cover our servers 24/7 - do late shifts and play Risk when someone is off together. It's just a great life, can't see myself working for anyone else again. :)
CaveatEmptor 12-11-2002, 06:35 AM Nexdog--
Your own business is unquestionably the way to go. There may be an opportunity arising for all of you bigger resellers in that it looks like Cable & Wireless is going doing the pan. For months they had been sitting on a ledge threatening to jump but finally some of the bricks slipped over the past few weeks. The primary reason for their unwinding is C&W Global in the US, which deals with Internet and web site hosting--it's too cheap apparently and they overpaid a couple of years ago. The investors are pressing for Global to be closed. What would be likely is that it will be sold off for cheap or broken up. If there was a way to get even a small piece of it then small players could benefit. On the other hand, if they actually close it, then it could drive up the cost of renting space in a NOC.

NexDog 12-11-2002, 06:50 AM I'm pretty sure it wouldn't affect us at all.

NexDog 12-11-2002, 09:08 AM I got one and get to spend every day with my best friends too. That is priceless. :)
