One word. Advertise.
Three words. Word of Mouth.

Post in forums such as these and sitepoint with your URL in your signature. Once you start to obtain customers treat them like absolute gold. Give them an incentive to stay with you. Make them feel special and they will tell others about you.

It's worked for me thus far.

There was a recent post about making flyers and brochures in the Running a Web Hosting Biz forum. You might want to check that out as it has some good links :)

You should also submit your website to all major search engines and get listed on some web hosting directories.

Make sure your customers are happy and hopefully they will bring you more in return :)

Create a partnership with web site designers, so that each time they get a client you'll have a 99% chance of getting one too. :)

If you ponder about this story it is the same strategy adopted by low cost hosting offers. Mostly it is the newbie designer and client who goes in for a cheap hosting plan. And if some one complains just return the money to him and everyone is happy in the end. Most of the newbies will think "ok this is all I can get for this money.....fair enough".....and he will move on to another host without a complaint.

THE ESSENTIAL QUALITY FOR BECOMING A ACHIEVER

Here it goes.........

A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer
for $100.00.

The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day the farmer
drove up

and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died last night."

Kenny replied: "Well then, just give me my money back."

The farmer said: "Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

Kenny said: "OK then, just unload the donkey."

The farmer asked: "What ya gonna do with him?"

Kenny: "I'm going to raffle him off."

(Note: To raffle is to sell a thing by lottery - draw

lot - to a group of people each paying the same amount for a ticket)

Farmer: "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!"

Kenny: "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead."

A month later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, "What happened

with that dead donkey?"

Kenny: "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars apiece and made a
profit of $898.00."

Farmer: "Didn't anyone complain?"

Kenny: "Just the guy who won. So I gave him back his two dollars."

Kenny grew up and eventually became the chairman of Enron.

Approximately how many clients can I stick on a Celeron 700 with 256 MB RAM? Currently there are 3 people on it, and I must say, they're happy with it (fast unoverloaded :))

256mb ram is really not enough for hosting, but if you stay away from forums and php-heavy sites you should be fine. forums would eat your box for lunch =]

I get my accounts from the strangest ways you can imagine... sitting at bars, going to buy a car, you name it - but online trying to advertise to the world for hosting is a joke, and I wouldn't waste the time or money...

We got all our clients at first by sinking in $100/mo into adverising at certain indexes. When we had a few hundred, our happy customers started referring in alot. And then we caught a bunch of displaced webmasters when a popular host folded. Now we are concentrating on SEO and a new site. The site will blow you away so much that I'm sure anyone that visits will signup. :)
