Hello,

This would be the first time that I have made a request on wht. Im part of an emergency group (all volunteer) in the city of port coquitlam b.c Canada. The more pacific group im involved in is emergency communications. Within this group there are about 20 volunteers that give time to train and prepare for our needs. The volunteers are mostly youth of the community who love to help. We all have our HAM licence and our own HAM radio’s. We do have some limited funding from our city but it is not sufficient for our needs. One of the things we really need are some old laptops. These laptops would be used with a system call “packet” named for the reason it sends packet’s. The thing is, It dose not send it though the Internet. For the explanation that if there is a disaster or emergency, power, telephones, cable and the internet will be down. The laptop connects to a “Packet Communicator” that converts digital packet the same way a 56k modem converts digital packets to be sent over the old phone line. The “Packet Communicator” sends the packet through the HAM air waves to be received by another station. We have purchased the packet communicators with our funding, but we do not have the funding to purchase laptops.

What I ask the community of WHT is, can you spare one used laptop? What we need is a few laptop running windows 95 with 32mb ram min. If you can help, or would like more information or have a question. Please PM me.

Thank you,

Seeing that you are an internet service provider, couldn't you buy a laptop from the next income you get from your customers?

Search eBay.com for IBM ThinkPad's they're pretty low priced. :)

TheTech, You can only purchase and donate so much by yourself. I donated a LazerJet which I figured was less quicker to find. I figured that someone would easily be able to pick up an old laptop. On im sorry to say, their isn’t much excess income to be spending with Christmas coming up.

adminME I will be getting in touch with you shortly...

thanks

Gee whiz, if you were looking for some desktops with those specs I could probably help you out. Got several of them just laying around the shop. But no laptops.

Sounds cool. If you let me know before 1:00 EST, I can have it on the UPS truck.

I did a work experience week with CFS (Computer for schools) where we refurbished donated/old computers and ship them off for schools. I worked with one in Burnaby, BC. Not sure if they ship to non-profit like you guys, but you can always try. I was there two years ago, and they had laptops then.

Sorry, but I don't have their number, but it's near loughheed hwy and boundry i think

AdidasROXX,
loughheed hwy and boundry is about 20 minutes away. You wouldn’t be able to provide more information on this? Any kind of name?

Thanks

Well, when I was working there, it use to be in the old Telus building (or is that more like grandview hwy and boundry?) , but they may have expanded or move next door.

my connection is screwy so I may not be able to check WHT too often for the next few days. Email me and I'll try to find my old contract forms and maybe they'll have address/phone numbers.
