I have never seen this before. But it is hard to believe to get a free VPN since someone has to pay in the other end without getting back virtually anything.

Yes you do.
You get word-of-mouth-advertising.

Free VPN service?
I think it's great for newbies who want to learn about VPN? :D
Real businesses won't use that free service ;)

VPNs in this context is for encrypting communications and proxying data.
They are commonly used in countries which actively practice censorship.

Google was at least at some point operating a free vpn service. It's main intent was for users of free / open wireless networks. It was of course free, being Google..

If they can get adverts inserted into your web pages (ignoring legal/ethical issues) maybe but anyone offering free internet is ultimatly going to have issues

lol you just advertised them for free on one of the best place for such services. Also a link here @WHT, can you estimate the value in terms of SEO.

Or, is it becuase:

Due to problems related to server attacks and account abuses, we have decided NOT offer free accounts on January 1st 2010. Stay tuned for further notices on our blog and our Twitter account.

You can still get one if you are willing to promote our service. ;)

SecureIX used to provide a free VPN service, which I have tried before, so this doesn't surprise me. Actually I think they still do provide a free personal version (256kbit).

With either provider I would personally purchase premium/business plans because of bandwidth and also reliability. Can anyone review the speeds on the free editions?

I came across this free VPN service about a month ago. They have servers in the USA and France:
http://ultravpn.fr/

Tried them once and the speeds are decent. They also use OpenVPN.

Hehe this is interesting on that page

You cannot use UltraVPN to send spam. If you use UltraVPN to commit hacking, you are required to cover your traces. Hehe they should not condone hacking in this way :D
