View Full Version : Overpriced domains ?
Pillhead 12-01-2002, 05:14 PM Theres a domain im after called pillhead.com, now this guy has it and hes doing sod all with it.
Anyway, I emailed him and asked him if he wanted to sell it, the guy says yeah, but he wants like $500 for it.
Do you think that is just a stupid price, or does the domain pillhead.com really have some kind of face value ?
pillhead.net and pillhead.org were both available, I got pillhead.org, and he only registered pillhead.com like just over a year ago, hardly the domain that got snapped up straight away.
I personally think that the domain pillhead.com has no face value to anyone apart from me, due to it being my nickname nad wanting it for personal reasons.
Any experts on pricing domains up that think it should be worth anywhere near $500? Would like all advice so I can work up an email to write back and tell him to stop being so stupid :)
Pilgrim 12-01-2002, 05:28 PM He has it, you want it.
I think that is the bottomline of the story.
Which means he can ask any price he thinks he can get away with.
RajanUrs 12-01-2002, 05:29 PM If he doesnt have an active website without any content and purpose you can fight for it on grounds of sqautting. New laws require that any domain registered and the website is not hosted soon enough doesnt have solid grounds to fight a case.
Since your name is the domain name, get the others registered and set up some website with some activity like classifieds, forums etc. Then send him a notice for squatting on the name.

hehe, guess youve really HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD there really, when I face up to facts thats the total truth :)
Guess my point in this particular situation is, that I am never going to pay that sort of money, I dont want it that bad! But I feel the guy has it hoping for big money, which hes never going to get, and its going to waste, im not going to make any money from it either, I want it for a personal site, hmm, but yes your correct, it belongs to him, he can do what he wants with it, I want it, he knows that, so hes gonna try get the best price.
Suppose I was hoping that if I could get a decent reply I could pursuade him that its not worth that to anybody and giving it me for a reasonable price is the best thing for him, and is the best price hes ever going to get :-/

I like your idea, but notice my pillhead.org website is already there, its a clubbing website with free clubbing advice for people, my friend runs it for me ;)
The .com was going to be my personal dj profile website, and thats all I want it for!
Pilgrim 12-01-2002, 05:42 PM It's due to expire in 3 months. He's had it for 3 years and not done anything with it. Chances are he won't renew it.
Just don't contact him about it again or in any way show your interest. Cross your fingers and pray to whichever God (if any) you believe in :)
Incognito 12-01-2002, 06:51 PM I saw a domain that tied in well to other sites I owned, but unfortunately namezero was holding it. They wanted $150. However, even worse is their long agreement which you have to consent to. So, I said no. About six months later, they let it lapse and I paid my $10 and now have it.

Go back and study INTERNET LAW a little more. That is the most rediculous response that has ever been posted...especially on a site completely dedicated to internet related issues!
THIS IS NOT HIS NAME! IT IS HIS NICKNAME and you suggest that he make up some site to make it look like there is a need for it? Why stop there? Why don't you just suggest that he trademark it and incorporate a business under the name and then he can not only get the domain name but sue for damages???
Of all the misguided responses, this one takes the cake (for this week at least).
Seriously, just checking the whois, the registrant has actively renewed it since 2000. He owns it, if you want it and I mean really want it, then offer him about 1/2 and then see where you 2 can meet on price. Don't give in to the $500 at any rate and further you can make just a good of use of the other .tld's that are available and the one you purchased.
I have plenty of experience with these things and the advise quoted above would be a monumental waste of time (IMO).
Good Luck!
:D
nameslave 12-01-2002, 08:03 PM There are different takes on how to get a desired name that has already been registered, but my advice is NEVER to contact the owner. Frankly, $500 is a modest price to ask for in a case like this. If he is really greedy or being nasty, $1,000 is what he should start with at the least.
ZiCmaN 12-01-2002, 08:08 PM nameslave-
I agree. I have clients that choose to try it themselves regardless of my advice to not contact and let it expire or maybe it will lapse or whatever. In most cases unless it's registered through netsol, it will be available in 40 days or so.
These folks have spent $$$$ and felt good about it. I mean one guy even stated in an email that he had forgotten about it and only renewed it cause they contacted him. He made a cool $2,500 on that name.
But yeah, $500 is a small amount to ask, but that is also because the owner knows that it has no real value in the long run except for a situation like this one.

I'm usually a very nice person and have always been refrained from posting rude remarks, BUT PLEASE do NOT render your two cents like a pro when you're not particularly knowledgeable in this area, to say the least.
As an alleged cybersquatter who has registered hundreds of domains and been sued (court and NOT WIPO arbitration) and legally threatened more than just a couple of times, I guess I'm obliged to point out to Pillhead that RajanUrs' remarks are totally incorrect.
nameslave 12-01-2002, 08:28 PM >ZiCmaN: ... one guy even stated in an email that he had forgotten about it and only renewed it cause they contacted him ...
Exactly. I myself have renewed names that were to let expired JUST because people asked about them.
Acroplex 12-01-2002, 11:44 PM Those who call the others squatters, simply are late birds that missed the early worm :D

I think that would be the worse thing to do, just put forward your best offer and tell him that is the best that you can possibly do and you cant go any higher, make sure to note that it is just for a personal site.
telling him he is being stupid would more than likely just aggravate him, and not help your cause.
dsotmoon 12-02-2002, 07:48 PM since you have already contacted him, I would email him back one more time with what you think is a reasonable offer, if he bites, great, if not, you still have pillhead.org, I do think its probably worth 500.00, sounds like something someone could turn into a great traffic generator
Acroplex 12-02-2002, 07:50 PM How about both of you quit taking pills and call it a fresh start? :D
