View Full Version : .COM & .NET price increases!
clark05 03-03-2010, 04:14 PM For those of you who haven't heard, Verisign (the registry for .com and .net domains) will be raising the prices of .com domains 7% and .net domains 10%! This will happen on July 1st 2010...
Anyone know why they are raising the prices...? :(
Jesse_613 03-03-2010, 04:33 PM The price of everything goes up every year. Look at the price of your morning coffee. That has gone up. Their costs go up as does the end users
Techno 03-03-2010, 07:23 PM Verisgn's current 6 year contract with ICANN (2006-2012) allows it to raise prices a maximum of 7% in 4 of the 6 years. I have lost count but believe this is the last increase before the contract expires in 2012.

In case you're not aware of it, they do that EVERY year now, so that exclaimation mark is not really necessary.
tanfwc 03-03-2010, 08:32 PM Time to charge end user higher. They might think that why the hosting provider are increasing their price and i'm sure that they will make a fuss out of it.
MarcoIthink 03-03-2010, 08:33 PM for those interested, here ICANN Registry agreement with Verisign:
http://www.icann.org/en/tlds/agreements/com/ (.com signed in 2006)
http://www.icann.org/en/tlds/agreements/net/ (.net signed in 2005)
clark05 03-03-2010, 09:11 PM I know they raise every year, I just didn't know what the agreement was. Thanks Marco.

To make more money
AL-Benjamin 03-04-2010, 06:08 AM I really hope that when the contract does eventually come around again Verisign is booted out.
oliviakitty 03-04-2010, 06:53 AM This really does suck! I have a very large number of domains, primarily .COM
AL-Benjamin 03-04-2010, 07:08 AM So whats the base pricing now then?

The fee for registrars is still $6.86 for .COM NOW. The increase will be effective JULY.
Look for Verisign's press release last December.

Not really. Because any kind of price increase makes those portfolios of thousands of domains more expensive to carry.
In turn, that means more will drop and become available for others.

Lana Galileo 03-04-2010, 03:45 PM Do you expect this prices will go higher and higher? Maybe smart move is then to buy domains for next 10 years?
teachforjune-Scott 03-04-2010, 04:01 PM I remember when they were $70 for two years!

AFAIK, they were not increased in 2009. Please let us know if you have different information.
caisc 03-04-2010, 04:19 PM I can bear $1 hike to preserve my internet identity :)

Or $100 for 2 years. (I was a bit late to the show, and missed the free days before 1995.) To old-timers like myself, these recent raises are really nothing; of course, I don't own like 100,000 domains either.
