I am negotiate with several colo providers at the moment. I am just wondering what kind of fee does colo provider normally charge?? I mean what would be a reasonable pricing ?? I have seem some colo company charge $175-$200 per hour. Isn't that over way over priced? I mean if server crashed once a month and requires fsck. Thats $200 goes into sink for just a reboot. I find it very hard to believe. Why would people want to colo if tech support charge is so expensive.

Hello Eiv!
I believe what you are referring to is "Remote Hands." Remote Hands is basically the tech support people acting as if you were them.
They will stand by the whichever server they are working on with a crash cart and perform commands for you, read messages for you, etc etc etc. Normally most companies will provide you with a few hours free.
Try to get at least 1-2 hours free per month.

or anything that requres one hand.. reboots, cross connects, whatnot. or invest 300 or so in a apc masterswitch/apc masterswitch plus and do reboots yourself.
if you cant swindle free time, thats your best bet.

that does seem a bit pricey.
we give 30 free minutes of maintenance per month as well as free reboots then charge additional time accordingly...
in the past i've seen companies charge $50-80/hour for support, but man, 175-200

That price seems way high, if I thought that was reasonable, I'd be opening a data center tomorrow...

A lot of hosts will give you a better rate if you ask them during the sales pitch :), not everyone charges that much, i know theres a few others around much like ourselves that charge < $50/hr which is a reasonable amount if you consider that its like consulting (you always charge more for 1 hour of work then 10 hours, not a steady workload/income source).

175-200 ? WOW that is huge.
We stand about $75. We dont charge for reboots and most of the time its easier if you just give the customer a free APC port so they can reboot when they want. Saves our tech support arm a lot of time when my serious problems have to be looked into.
Kind regards

$75/hr is pretty much the norm to charge except on holidays then you can charge like 300+/hr for a skilled technician.

Greetings:
What is normal depends on the quality of the staff.
Most companies do charge nothing for remote reboots; but if a system administrator has to work on your server, that's another story.
Typically, companies with a long history who have very experienced staff charge $75 to $325 per hour with a happy medium often in the $150 spot.
Thank you.
