Hi all!
First of all I'd like to apologize for cross-posting this (almost same) thread in the RS forums and here, but I realize that WHT might be a better place to to get answers, as the Cpanel forum over at RS is yet very new (and I guess not too many Cpanel users over there either). I also know that there are several Ensim vs Cpanel threads in this forum, and I don't want this to be one of them. So I'll ask some very specific questions:
I've been running Ensim for a while now, and I quickly discovered some of the drawbacks with that control panel.. Among several:
No incremental backup possibilities. Well, of course there is a possibility to back up your /home/virtual area in increments (f.i. Reoback). But how would you really go about restoring that data without much hassle when not using the vhbackup tool? I have yet to see a simple answer to that one.
The vhbackup tool. It's a fantastic tool, very user friendly. However, also very buggy (read: Unicode errors in 3.0, and now also discovered in 3.11.) Not powerful enough either (read: Lacks MySQL backups, incremental backups).
The Ensim patches and software update. Ensim comes with modified versions of Bind, Apache, Sendmail and possibly other programs too. Modifying these may be destructive to the control panel! This means that an up2date is not to be recommended unless you're really sure what you're doing. This also means that when security issues are found with the software, we'll often have to wait for Ensim to make a patch available. In the meantime...!
The major advance in using Ensim is, however, the great amount of documentation found in different forums. You can probably do well with only a minimum of knowledge by finding your way through well-documented how-to's. This is not thanks to Ensim, but thanks to the communities using it.
However, due to the drawbacks I've found (a few of them being major ones) I am looking into the possibility of switching control panels. I've heard lots of great things about Cpanel, like being able to update the OS and components without worrying whether I'd break the control panel software and such. I've taken a quick look at the demo over at cpanel.net, but I guess I just don't know enough about this program to go ahead and switch. It's costy and probably a time-consuming affair to do, so I want the decision to be well-concidered. My questions:
What are the main advantages that Cpanel offers over Ensim?
Is there any incremental backup solution with easy restoring for Cpanel?
Is there anywhere I can find Cpanel how-to's etc? Perhaps some forums?
Is there an easy way of moving my clients from Ensim to Cpanel?
I've read a few posts from users stating that Cpanel is buggy, but what exactly is so buggy about Cpanel? As I understand, it updates itself on a regular basis? Can I run automatic updates through f.i. up2date or similar commands?
Anything else I should take into concideration?
Last, but not least, where is the best/cheapest place to get a Cpanel licence (leased or owned)?
Thank you!
