I am thinking of setting up as a reseller firstly to host a couple of sites I have planned, but also to host a few other sites, hopefully to cover costs.
Anyway I was wondering wether people would recommend I go for a linux platform or windows (it doesn't matter for my sites I can write asp.net or php). Which is there a greater demand for linux or windows hosts?

No. I'd recommend that you opt for a host running BSD -- most likely, FreeBSD. :D

Windows can handle MySQL and PHP, Linux cannot handle ASP (very well) and MS SQL. Just a thought. :)

It depends on what market you go after really I would say... l

1) FreeBSD
2) Linux
3) Other Unix
4) Windows
In that order :D

if you want to use asp then go for Windows. And if you want to resel your space windows servers are more expensive then Linux or FreeBSD.

Lindows was never made to be a server operating system and therefore hosts probably won't use this nor would it be a good platform for web hosting.

Well thats the problem I am new to this and wondered if anyone more experienced could give me a better of idea of the markets?
To me it seems that for my price limit of about $70 a month I can get a much better deal (in terms of bandwidth, not having to pay for each sql server etc) with a php/linux/freeBSD type host than I would with windows, also that PHP seems to have become very popular so I assume there to be a greater demand than for ASP hosting.
However I am also assuming that the reseller market for PHP is probably more competitve that that for ASP due to there being less of a price barrier and that perhaps the type of person or company wanting an ASP site will be willing and able to pay more than those who want a PHP one.
Finally I can't seem to find many decent ASP hosts that offer reselling, I've noticed that when people ask on this board they don't get a huge response, is that just because the make up of people here is primarily linux/freeBSD or is it just because there aren't any decent ASP hosts that offer reselling?

I'd say most of the people here are Linux biased. There are Windows resellers out there. They'll probably be a little more costly than Linux reseller accounts because of the licensing fees, but should still be within your budget. You can also get limited forms of ASP on Linux. Although ASP 3 isn't available on Linux, ChiliSoft is supposed to run the older ASP 2.

yeah...but still it costs something (chilli soft)
