MARLBORO, New Jersey (AP) -- Passengers on a Greyhound bus said the driver told them he was taking them "to the Taliban" after they criticized his meandering route Saturday night, prompting a massive police response.

The New York-bound bus hit heavy traffic soon after leaving Philadelphia, and the driver took several alternate routes to find less congested roads, said passenger Sally Weisbrot, 30.

"People were angry and making fun of the driver, yelling 'Do you know what you're doing up there? Do you know where you're going?' He clearly was annoyed," she said.

Weisbrot said the driver then shot back: "'I'm taking you to the Taliban."

She said the driver was only joking because he was upset, but some people panicked and called 911 on their cell phones. Within minutes, 18 police cars surrounded the bus and pulled it over, she said.

Dara Salcman, a passenger from New York, said passengers were ordered to get off the bus with their hands in the air. Officers had their guns pointed at the bus, she said.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was taken for questioning at police headquarters while authorities searched the bus. They found nothing unusual; prosecutors said they were investigating the driver but did not give details.

Jamille Bradfield, a spokeswoman for Dallas-based Greyhound, said the bus was carrying 30 passengers. They were allowed to re-board the bus and continue their trip with a different driver.

I recently heard a story of some Pakistani men who were kicked off a plane because they joked about taking over the plane for Allah.

He said that because he knew it would freak some people out. Why else would he say that? You play you pay. Although this is certainly overreacting by some paranoid people the fact is we do live in different times now. Just like you can’t say bomb on an airplane (even before 9-11) I guess you better not joke around about that stuff either!

And there have been several Al-Qaeda sleeper cells busted in Buffalo, NY, Detroit, so it’s not a stretch that there could be “Taliban” in Hoboken! So I guess yes Americans can’t take a joke when it comes to this stuff and I don’t blame them.

Joking about bombs, hijackings etc. has always been a big big no no in airports and on planes.

Well,in this day and age with all the crap going on,it isnt a good idea to joke about the taliban!!! I mean, granted, the passangers were stupid to believe the driver could possibly take them there (hehehe, its overseas) Oh well......

The Dude :)

Well, I suppose the only way to take someone to the Taliban in a bus would be to drive it off a cliff... so maybe the fear was justified...

Now that would be a cool idea for a movie!

A terrorist plants a bomb aboard a Greyhound bus that drives on the interstate with a bunch of regular folks. The bus cannot go any slower than 55 mph or else the bomb that the terrorists planted on board will detonate.

Oh wait....that's the plot of "Speed" :D

Yeah, it was the plot of Speed and it's STILL dumb.

Now picture your mother on that bus, not one of the ones taunting the driver, or even *you* -and the driver shouts out, "I'm taking you to the Taliban." Now, I don't know how he said it, but personally... I know my mother wouldn't have been too thrilled with that, nor would I really want to be on a bus where the driver was saying that. Doesn't exactly put your mind at ease, and I could see people calling the cops.

Some things just don't make good jokes, and I think this isn't funny. Pre 9-11 I know you coyuld have been kicked off a plane and arrested for saying anything with the word "bomb" in it regardless of the intended context.

I remember me awhile back (2000) flying with my grandparents, and we were talking about games, and I made a comment that "I'm a good bomber in games." It got quiet, and people stared at me... I **almost** got into sooooo much trouble. Too bad people cannot dicern between space figters, and airliners ... ... The Medusa Bomber in Freespace rocks! :stickout:

Some people need to exercise common sense before anyone gets busted....

<raw USA fact>
Then again, you're guilty till proven innocent.

thats stupid, thats the kinda joke id be thinking but not say in the same situation. phoning the police over that is just dumb. it was obvious to any fool with half a brain what he was doing. yes he probably shouldnt have reacted back at the passengers unless they were seriously having a go instead of playing jesting but phoning 911 because your too dumb to recognise a joke, thats exactly what bin laden wanted.
