I have an IBM eServer xSeries 345. Tried installing Ubuntu (Server) and didn't make it past static IP configuration. While I think I have since solved that problem, here is what I'm looking for.
Just as a personal project, I want to host my own site. I don't really understand how to get from where I am :Server with no OS- to where I want to be: WAMP or similar set-up, with some sort of CMS; Modx, wordpress, CNS made simple.

Obviously this won't be a "pure" server, because I rely on GUI, but I figured their are enough experts here to get me started in the right direction. Anyone recommend a combination of some sort? I have alot of spare time, just no funding (College :)

Thanks in advance

As you said it's just a personal project (host your own site), then I would recommend XAMPP for Linux (http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html)and you're ready to go with any CMS, Wordpress or such things.

Good luck and all the best ;)

I installed server Ubuntu 9.10 with Lamp and open ssh last night, then putty, and finally started with Joomla, but for some reason Mysql isn't working right..when I try to start it is says [fail]and I need to make a database with it to finish the Joomla install.

@Agustan what is the difference between LAMP and XAMPP? (is there any)

Also, I'm not set on Joomla, will prolly try Modx just to see the differences Thanks again for the help

Maybe you can read this doc about "LAMP made easy with XAMPP (http://www.linux.com/archive/feed/45744)"
