Hi there,

i am currently looking for a suitable webhosting solution for the startup we are currently founding. Specs as follows:

country: US

clients: 80% smartphones on all mobile us carriers, 20 % regular internet users - xhtml as well as apps (android and apple)

software running on the server: all in .NET - mobile social network with all standard features, like search, messaging, profile views, notifications, etc..

DB: needs to be MSSQL Server

Traffic and Usage: We expect 50 concurrent users as base traffic and 150 users peak, xhtml pages or webservice http stream will only be very small, as its mobile internet (each page not more than 10k)

What the hoster / the solution should be capable of:

- 24h live support (chat or phone)
- fast network response time (latency, ping, etc)
- fast connection to mobile carriers
- our appplication should run fast (of course) on a steady base (not only in "low traffic times"
- hoster should take care of firewall, antivirus and OS patches

So... the question now is: What is better:

- shared hosting (we then would have a huge machine and most of the times a fast service - but if other customers create a high server load, the performance might slow down)

- VPS (advantage that its cheap, but we dont have full control over the server - especially mportant regarding some special IIS setting we need, also CPU and RAM ressources are shared equally, only like 1GB RAm is guaranteed, most of the host dont guarantee dedicated CPU ressources)

- Dedicated Server - full control of evertyhing, alll the resources are ours, but the big disadvantage is, that for our desired budget of around 100$ mothly we would only get a one-processor, 1GB machine not even including the MSSQL server license.

What do you think? Maybe i dont have the full picture yet on all the offers on the market... We might also stretch the budget a little bit, but of course - the less, the better.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
George

I'll suggest you to check out WHT's offers section, they got some really good deals going on there.

thanks for the reply, but unfortunately that doesnt help me.
From what i see there, none of my questions is beeing answered :-(

I just ordered kickass VPS, but somehow this company seems to be not as good as everybodies opinion ... i ordered friday and nothing happened since then besides the billing email. Cusotmer support chat is offline since then ..

Shared Hosting - This is not suitable for your requirements. Since you need 50 concurrent user access to the system, you are certainly going to eat up good amount of system resources. So, the shared environment is not advised.

VPS Hosting - This is the perfect option for your budget. There are many hosting companies offering 2 to 4 GB of guarnateed RAM & atleast 2 to 3 GHZ of CPU power for $100 a month. Mostly 3 to 4 GB of RAM and 3 GHZ processing speed will fullfil your requirement.

Dedicated Hosting - You need atleast $200/month budget for a speedy and managed windows dedicated server. So, double your budget and take a deep rest. :)

Hello,

you should look for providers offering Citrix Xen or VMware VPS solutions. RAM is guaranteed and many providers also dedicated CPU so there is no "fair share" usage there

- Dedicated Server - full control of evertyhing, alll the resources are ours, but the big disadvantage is, that for our desired budget of around 100$ mothly we would only get a one-processor, 1GB machine not even including the MSSQL server license.

A god VPS is miles better then a low end dedicated server. You would get more CPU, more RAM, RAID10, redundant server components, etc, etc, etc (not items typically found in low end servers). You can also scale your VPS until you actually need a GOOD dedicated server. I would not even think of getting a dedicated server until you need 4-8 CPUs and 8 or more GB RAM.

Another option you should look at for this type of solution is a Cloud offering.

Think the OP needs cloud hosting taking into account his/her demands, am I right?
