First: Python for simplicity,
second: Java for static type checking.

I love doing c++ but typically never have anything that requires it. So usually it's more playing around doing stuff in opengl and using c++ than anything practical. For scripting or web stuff I prefer PHP over any of the other languages.

I suppose I really don't much care what language it is as long as it's C based. All the same after that besides function names and language specific features.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Perl. Hard to explain, but it always seems that it doesn't do what I want, but always what I intended.

There should always be more than one way to do things properly. I'm probably a bit biased as it was my first language...

I absolutely hate Perl it's just awkward to program in for me. It could be most other languages I had worked in before Perl were all similar to C or C itself.

.NET in every flavor

Because of its versatility, useable on the web, windows, services, silverlight, web services, ...

Mostly VB.NET though, started with it, sticked with it, altough I do some projects in C# too

I really enjoyed doing C# work this past Summer.

That said, Python is just so elegant.

Python (specially for web - with Django).

Unless a PHP developer is using a REALLY smart framework (which Symphony isn't for instance and a lot of them aren't), if he does the Django tutorials and spends some time on Python and Django, he will never return to PHP :D. At least I didn't :D.

Python for the web (Django): clean, batteries-included.
Perl for networking, general-purpose server-side apps: very powerful, expressive.
Java for client-side apps: complete, portable

For my future study: Erlang and Haskell.

C++ - applications (only write automation programs for games a.k.a bots)
python - pretty much anything I can use it for, i love python.
php - small stuff..
lua - I use lua in ALL of my game bots for scripting routines.. I reverse game functions and expose them to lua.

Same here :)

I prefer regular C more than C++ tho :P

I don't like objects very much (I try to stay away from Java-variants) - procedural programming ftw! :D

Is it true that Facebook is being programmed entirely from scratch?

If you would have to develop a social networking platform similar to Facebook, but a little bit more complex than this stupid website, in which programming language would you build it (front-end, back-end)?

I don't understand why not everyone favors Java over PHP. is it because there are less Java experts available on the job market than PHP developers?

Why is the Front-End of Facebook in PHP and the Back-End in Java? Why not completely in Java?

I started in PHP...

Then I grew up and learned good languages :)

Python and Ruby right now are my personal favorites. Extremely powerful languages right there. With C/++ being close 3/4th however I never find use for what little I do know with those languages to be useful in large applications...

PHP obviously works so I would just go with it. Even more now when Facebook team addressed and provided solution for PHP scaling issues when you are dealing with billions of hits per day (HipHop).

I am sure there would be some python there too (threaded background updates) and maybe even java (jabber chat server).

I don't understand why not everyone favors Java over PHP. is it because there are less Java experts available on the job market than PHP developers?

There is that and then there is the fact that working with PHP is easy and fast and that java is big fat memory hog.

Why is the Front-End of Facebook in PHP and the Back-End in Java? Why not completely in Java?

I am not sure where you got that information. Facebook is written in PHP. Java is probably used for only one or two services (I'd guess their chat would be one of those).

If batch files count as a language, then that is second. Very useful.
Ten years ago, maybe even five years ago it would have been Delphi.
