What make a site to go on top of the other one (keyword rankings) in google search (free search insert). I am new in a company, and they are asking why their distributors' websites show first than theirs when consumers are searching the net. I check the pages and they are using pretty much the same keywords than their distributors for each product. what suggestion can I make them to improve the ranking of their website. Sometimes their site are in the 2nd page off google. So please let me know.

Things you need to keep in mind are:

how old are your clients websites?
Older websites will be more trusted by Search Engines

what is the keyword density?
Your clients may have the same keywords, but how often are they used in your clients websites compared to their competitors?

does their competitor have the keyword in their domain name?
If I was searching for say a fishing rod, www.fishingrod.com would always come up above www.MyFishingCompanyy.com because the keywords are in the domain.

How much content is there on your clients websites?
Content is king, get a lot of well written SEO targetted content, keep updating, editing and adding to it. Search engines love this.

Page titles
Ensure that each page of your clients websites have GOOD titles, a nax of 65 characters with the best keywords that relate to the page, but make sure it reads well to.

Linkage!
Links from other websites to your clients websites from other trusted websites will also help you move up in google.

All the above will help, but SEO is a dark art and there is no way to guarantee 1st place in. If your clients want to be on the first page, then try PPC, it can be costly but it does work and you can reap great rewards from it.
