View Full Version : Hosts that cut out features
chrisb 11-29-2002, 10:36 PM I have tried a few hosts that say they have CPanel, and they give you the cpanel.net demo page. AFTER you sign up, you find some of the features are missing from WHM(Webhost Manager) and C Panel, OR the control panel is totally different from what you saw, and you cannot get that one.
Also, I've tried hosts that didn't have C Panel, who claim they have shared SSL, SSH, etc. Then, again, AFTER you sign up, you find out that they don't have it. You ask, and they say it's coming. You wait. It never comes.
And here's still another one. I noticed servers overloaded and pointed it out to the host, only to be told that they would take care of it. A week later, no difference.
Why do hosts do this? Don't they understand that people will cancel anyway? Some things are said to be removed because of security, and maybe this is the case; but it should be clearly stated on their website.
AussieHosts 11-29-2002, 10:42 PM Are you ever going to document your findings Chris? :)

No. I'm not going to name the hosts specifically because I don't want to argue with them here. It was just a rant. Why do you ask Gary? Do you do any of that?
Lesli 11-29-2002, 11:25 PM If any business is saying that they sell a certain thing, and then don't provide that thing after you've paid, then bluntly, the hosts are guilty of false advertising and could be guilty of fraud, as it's legally defined.

You ask alot of questions and seem to try a lot of hosts. I'm not having a go at you...it's a good thing. You're like a roving reporter.
Do you do any of that?
Not that I know of. :)

Reality Hosting 11-30-2002, 01:59 AM With so many web hosts out there these days, you get lotsa bad apples.

I really haven't tried that many hosts; and actually would love to find a good one. I HATE changing.
BTW, I haven't tried any australian hosts yet. I'll be purchasing an acct with you shortly, and posting a review. :)
Tropical Tundra 11-30-2002, 03:05 AM With SO many bad hosts out there it's hard to stick with only one. Do host company owners think we (consumers) like to switch from host to host? Unfortunately sometimes that’s the only option we have. That is why I will never pay yearly upfront AGAIN. So we just keep plugging away until we find a decent one. A consumer who has gone through several hosts shouldn't necessarily reflect anything bad on the consumer more on all the crappy companies that seem to dominate the hosting industry. No offense to you out there who run a good hosting business.
DarktidesNET 11-30-2002, 03:05 AM Well, WHM features are editable through root so some won't appear unless the admin lets you use them.
cPanel, I guess it depends what version they run because you can't 'disallow' features of it from what I've seen, only WHM can disallow certain things for reseller accounts.

I don't think that's correct. I was using the latest C Panel 5.?, and things were missing. It wasn't just at one host either. I've seen the following removed from CPanel by various hosts:
SSH applet in the file mgr
Backups
SpamAssasin
OSCommerce
DarktidesNET 11-30-2002, 03:25 AM Hmm, what I meant from is via WHM (like you can disallow ssh/dns stuff from resellers)
If they don't offer backups that would totally suck. I wouldn't trust anyone whose demo doesn't even go off their own site (like you said using cpanel.net)
I've noticed cPanel missing things before aswell (analog stats) but I meant it being removed via WHM. I've never installed it myself ... so maybe there's things you can do in the installation.
chrisb 11-30-2002, 03:27 AM I see. Thanks for the clarification, darktides.
Ocasionally thrid party software (like shopping cart, webmail, or message boards) is discontinued either due to the developer not updating when they should or security holes, or both.
If you are hooked on a peticular software that appears to come automated in cpanel, you should ask about it before signing up.
Sometimes it can be a chore keeping the cpanel demo updated as often as the cpanel itself is updated.
Anything other than those examples, they are just being sloppy, or devious.

Hmm maybe you need to go to cpanel.net and get a understanding of what is included in cpanel.
SSH applet in file manager I have never heard of, there is an SSH client in cpanel but it is up to host if they allow SSH access on the server. I do not an not listed as a feature on our site.
Backup should be there.
SpamAssasin should be there.
OsCommerce has never been part of cpanel it has Interchange and Agoria.
chrisb 11-30-2002, 03:35 PM I meant the SSH applet. My mistake about it being in the file mgr, though. I was wrong about OSCommerce being part of C Panel. Thanks for letting me know.
AceWeb 11-30-2002, 04:04 PM I see how you got OSCommerce. OSCommerce is a part of fantastico, which some hosts (like myself) intergrade it with cpanel. Agora cart, however, does come with cpanel.

Hosting providers limit some features that are in their client's cpanel for many reasons. Some cpanel features are buggy, some don't allow SSH, etc... Some don't allow clients to edit mx records, simply because people click on those links without really knowing or understanding what they do, and it can have an adverse affect on their site (like not getting email)
As far as WHM, you will never get the WHM you see on cpanel.net because that is the master WHM, and judging by your postings, you are looking for a reseller account, so thus the features that resellers are given will be trimmed down significantly.

If you are so concerned about what a host has included in their cpanel, you should ask them. It is not their obligation to tell you what they include, as all providers are different. It is however your obligation to do your due dilligence in finding out who the best provider for your account is.
