What is the best company to get a dedicated server which will mainly be used for static files and FTP as this is basically going to be used purely for downloading. What companies have the fastest network? I would like to pay no more than 120 bucks a month. Is unitedcolo fast? they seem to have very good prices.

Rackshack, check for their Bargain Section for 1$ or get P4 for 19-49$ setup (all in 120 monthly range)

I am on Rackshack and so far it has been a pleasant experience. Basically, the server is basically for downloads for our programs and display of mainly static information pages.

Currently, I am on a Cobalt RaQ 4i and it works fine for my needs but I guess it depends on your volume, you might want to look at the faster machines they have on offer.

if you are using mainly for downloads, I suggest unitedcolo... they have more options for future upgrading (to 2TB or more) at very economical prices. with rackshack, once you exceed 400gb, you pay the normal rates per gb and that can be expensive. I have good speeds with unitedcolo (can max 10mbit/s for a few days in a roll) Rackshack has less bw, harder to have an upgrade path, and frankly if you just want downloads, you will want the option for huge amount of bw in future (I'm guessing)

What you should care about is uptime then fastest network. All the networks are fast. UnitedColo had lot of downtime before.

do you mean a ftp for personal use or to host other people's files?

I know unitedcolo gets a lot of flak. But I think that depends on your luck. My box didn't experience any and that's probably cos it is placed in another segment of the network

Try Nocster's closeout servers (if you want a cheap CPanel and Managed solution)- http://www.nocster.com/closeout.shtml - or RackShack - they have good ensim & server pricing.
