View Full Version : "CD will not play on PC" crack?
I, Brian 11-29-2002, 06:52 PM I love John Williams music, but the darn "Star Wars 2" soundtrack won't play on PC.
Yes, I buy my CDs [because it's not very often anyway]. I've got all the other [bought] Star Wars music burned to my PC HD.
I figure there must be a crack out there so at least I can get tracks 2 and 13 to HD.
Any ideas?
[I figure this isn't going to turn into some kind of pirate pariah issue? I simply want to play what I've purchased for the environment I most work in]
interactive 11-29-2002, 07:21 PM Honestly would this be legal/moral?

It is 100% legal to copy music for your private use only (not to send to your best firends, serve on an FTP, or post to usenet). It's well within fair use, which will currently be redefined soon by the gov't anyhow to make it more equal, not so heaily tilted towards the record companies.
How are you trying to rip it (I use EAC and APE to rip and encode, but thats just me)?
Isnt there a trick with a felt tip pen?
filburt1 11-30-2002, 12:38 AM Yes, theoretically you can draw a ring around the outer edge of the CD (data surface) and you can rip the CD after that.
Acronym BOY 11-30-2002, 12:46 AM Depends on what type of protection scheme is in use, tehre are hundreds, with only a small handful being used mainstream. The felt tip pen doesn't always work, plus ti might damage your CD. On the other hand circumventing it through software doesn't really risk damaging much.
There are numerous (free) software programs that will tell you information about a disk, including the type of protection scheme in use, from safedisk2 to more obscure things like fortress3.
ChickenSteak 11-30-2002, 12:51 AM Looks like we just found the inventor of warez:D
Just kidding of course ;)

Actually, all my software for myself and business, is 100% legit. Including the $500 Finale licenses I have. ;)
There is no difference between a locksmith and a lockpick/safecracker. Both have the same knowledge. It is just what it is used for. Same with any sort of technical/mechanical knowledge.
I do believe intellectual property, software, music, books, etc etc etc, and the rights management, copyrights, trademarks, patents, etc etc etc, need to be overhauled. Compensation is a good thing. Ask Franklin. But the way things currently are is a disservice to the intellectual community at best.
Mester 11-30-2002, 01:16 AM If you already own it, why not just download it? I'm sure someone else has already figured a way to do it, so benfit from their work :)
I can see moral issues etc if you dont already own it, but seeing as you do, why not?

Because then he would be actively seeking participation in a warez forum, group, or news channel.... and that may be somewhere he does not want to tread....the same for limewire, kazaa, napster2, blah, blah, blah....
Acronym BOY 11-30-2002, 01:41 AM Or because he is on 56k.
Or becuase he doesn't want some one else substandard rip thrown into a 128k MP3. He would much rather have a uality rip and than have it ran through Monkey's Audio, lossless audio compression.
Or beucase it is a matter of principle as this is well within fair use and techincally becuase of the copy protection scheme, the disk no longer meets book standards for a "CD" which Phillips owns the rights to and there should not be packaged as such, which Philips is arguing in court currently.
I, Brian 11-30-2002, 04:27 AM The soundtrack in question is a Sony release, and like I hopefully stated, I'm not looking to do anything illegal in terms of distribution.
I figure there must be software somewhere that would make it playable on my PC?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
If not, I'll just have to wait until the Phillips case, mentioned above, is finally resolved - and the people at Sony get their silly wrists slapped for systematically treating buyers as pirates.
Why don't you just return the CD claiming "faulty" product (because it is!). If enough ppl return them, someone incharge will notice.
better idea, get (quite) a few of your mates to buy the same CD from different stores and then have them returned, this will boost the return number, and hopefully trigger something sometwhere.
The old rules of thumb will help too, ie for every 1 reported case, there must be another 10 to 100 not reported, many large company know about this fact.

I, Brian 11-30-2002, 07:53 AM Sincere thanks for the link, Zoomer. I've now taken the issue to the CD Freaks forum.
Aushosts 11-30-2002, 08:53 AM A mate of mine had a similar issue (bought cd and could not listen to it on his notebook), the reason it didnt work was because the CD had a data track on the disk. Only PCs could see it. You should be able to rip it with a program called CDex.
I, Brian 11-30-2002, 10:50 AM I believe it's one of those protection methods filled with nonsense data - not only will it not play, it will freeze up my PC while it attempts to spend infinity trying to read looped errors. So I don't figure ripping software will work. [just guessing, anyhow]. But like I said, I'll be asking in the CD Freaks forum.
Zoomer 11-30-2002, 01:10 PM I figure doing a raw dump (clonecd, blindread, etc) to an ISO/bin and then opening it up IsoBuster to delete the crap would work.
You can then burn it to a cdrw and rip it (?).
StarGate 11-30-2002, 02:21 PM Copy it with the ClonyXXL addon for CloneCD which disables all protections there are atm and you will have a CD that will obey :D
Then rip it with MediaPlayer or AudioGrapper to PC.
Aushosts 11-30-2002, 10:54 PM So how did u go Brian
sasha 11-30-2002, 11:05 PM If you have access to Linux box cdparanoia might help you.
