View Full Version : Looking for a new host - please help!
Tk_rtmt 11-29-2002, 12:50 PM After being directed here from the Totally Hosted forums, I've decided I'm going to leave them. But I don't know where to go!
So, can anyone recommend a reliable host? I need quite a lot of space (for at least one of my two accounts, but preferably both) and I'm a student, so I can't go real expensive (I know, I'm probably asking the impossible).
My site content is mainly text and images, altho I do host some .mov files and some .wmv files. I'd also like subdomains, sql databases and personal cgi-scripts allowed. The possibility of hosting a third domain name (addon domain) would be really helpful too.
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it! I'm actually late for work now but I'll be able to give more details later.
Thanks!
Tk, who's really still in shock.
ChilliBean 11-29-2002, 01:08 PM So how much space&bandwidth you need? and how much you are willing to pay?
jrianto 11-29-2002, 01:26 PM OOps... sorry I didn't know that :D
Try findmyhosting.com to search for one, they have a good system ;)
Chachi 11-29-2002, 01:30 PM TK, post your specs here so we know what sort of host you're looking for.
Edit: I removed my comments Jimmy, I'm sure you don't want them there highlighting that small mistake! :)
Tk_rtmt 11-29-2002, 08:44 PM Hey all!
Firstly, I think I missed something with jrianto and Fazel3 there - hehe!
Right, my specs at the moment (let's see if I can actually work them out!)
(here's a funny - just tried to login to my Cpanel for my specs - but of course, the licence is expired! <sigh>)
650mb space
35gb transfer
10/20 SQL databases (but I'd not need that many - just wanna run something like Invision Board, and... I don't know. 5 would probably be more than enough!)
A few hundred POP email addys (again, not all those are needed. 50 would probably be enough)
Subdomains (would like these if poss)
CGI-BIN (required, but I'm sure that's standard)
Access to an SSL - coz my friends and I are about to (hopefully) set up a little business venture (no, we're not about to go into webhosting!)
I need an Addon domain on one of the accounts - so I can host two sites there, if poss (or maybe, if two smaller accounts would be cheaper than one account hosting two sites - I don't know. This is why I need help <g>)
Also probably need as many FTP accounts as subdomains (for at least one of the accounts, anyway)
SSI!
Okay, if there's anything major I'm missing here, let me know!
I had two accounts of the spec above and I was paying US$20 a month (I was actually paying a little less than that until recently!) I know, unbelievably low - but you can understand kinda why I stayed with them so long now (I signed up with them in March, when they were still EShore). Yes, I'm an idiot.
How much could I pay? Well, maybe GB£20-£25 (about US$30-$38). I should say that I could probably drop the space and bandwidth a little.
Any suggestions? (please don't laugh me off the forums! <g>)
Thanx for any and all help!
Tk.
P.S. Another problem. I registered a domain name through TH - which I've gathered they registered through RegisterFly. I got them to change all the contacts - billing, administrator, etc - to me but how do I now get access to it? I'm thinking I still have to ask THIDIOT to change the DNS values... (anyone know a good, cheapish domain registrar with control panel too? I have one domain at freeparking.co.uk and whereas their cpanel is top notch, they're not on the cheap side for .com's/.net's. Great for .whatever.uk's tho!)
Scorpian 11-29-2002, 08:49 PM Tk_rtmt, I have couple of sites hosted with http://www.aventurehosting.co.uk/ and they are the developers of XMB Forum too. There support ain't bad, Good Prices, and so far is so Good.
Scorpian 11-29-2002, 10:51 PM Here's another one VERY RELIABLE and Fast. Also Cheap too.
http://www.alwayswebhosting.com
Total Waste 11-29-2002, 10:51 PM TK.
I am stuck with Totally Hosted too. I feel your pain.
Scorpian 11-29-2002, 11:07 PM Well I am in the Same Boat as You Guys. Also, I have some professional scripts Licience only for the sites hosted on totallyhosted.net So if I lose my sites I have to contact them to change the Licience Info
Oh, for a Good Reliable and cheap Registrar with Excellent Control Panel will be:
http://www.stargateinc.com
Luckily I haven't transferred the site I have on stargateinc to totallyhosted.

Yeah? What's your site?
I remember when a few weeks back when I got emailed by a third party saying that TH hadn't paid for their server. I really should have left a while ago.
I've just sent THIDIOT an email after talking to RegisterFly.com (whom he registered my domain name with) asking him to give me control of my domain name. But I've had to create an account at RegisterFly in order to do this, and after one of the threads on here, I'm not even sure I want to be @ RegisterFly...
Totally Screwed!
Thanks to the people who've suggested hosts so far! Aventurehosting.co.uk seems good, but I'm guessing you can't pay monthly... (I seem to have a thing about paying as I go!)
AlwaysWebHosting.com look good - I'd probably have to get the Platinum and host all my sites there. My one concern is bandwidth tho - could 30gb handle three main sites - with one of those sites split into subdomain sites, plus quite a few video files that would be available to download? I'm hopeless at working out bandwidth! I guess I should also ask - anyone had any probs with AWH.com?
Thanx again! (should I just state that this is implicit? Nah, think I'll keep thanking you all!)
Tk , who hasn't to be up for working in, oh, yeah, less that 5 hours! SH*T! :(
Edit: Just realised that in my exhausted state last night, that last bit doesn't make any sense whatsoever! Should say "who has to be up for work in, oh yeah, less than 5 hours!"
I'm sure very few people care tho! <g>
Scorpian 11-29-2002, 11:32 PM If Bandwidth is the main issue then I suggest www.Eryxma.com They have more then enough, plus you get $1/Gig for extra.
Also if you don't Like paying aventure hosting yearly, then choose their reseller plan which is monthly, and have some GOOD Deals. Actually if you are hosting more then couple of domains then Reseller give you MUCH MORE control and you can alocate bandwidth differently for each site.
http://www.aventurehosting.co.uk/resellers/
Also their main site is:
http://www.xmbforum.com
Scorpian 11-29-2002, 11:43 PM Also TK, how big would be your video files. I think 30 Gig is more then enough. Also, if you are concern that you will need more gig then leave a message in forum under the heading pre sale questions Or just mail them. usually you get a very fast response.
Tk_rtmt 11-30-2002, 03:26 PM They range from 7-12mb at the moment, but it's likely that some may be bigger in the future. As for the number - around 10?
I've just checked out Eryxma.com and they look good, but I'd prefer to pay monthly than a year in advance.
AlwaysWebHosting.com look brill! I guess I might have to take a chance with the bandwidth. I'm going to post another topic here asking for opinions of them - I'm not jumping into this again!
Thanx for all your help! Any other suggestions - I'm still open!
Regards,
Tk.
