I am looking for a Linux Box for a new venture. This box should have atleast 256mb of ram and atleast a 800mhz Pentium III chip. I am looking to stay under $400 a month, and will be using this as a hosting server, so CPANEL's would be nice and a necessity. As well, I would need 50gb + bandwidth. If you can either post good suppliers or an offer, that would be nice. If you want to contact me privately, please email: dherman@icomputerservices.com

You'll need to move this thread to the advertising forum.
Web hosts are not allowed to advertise (or post about prices/services) in this forum.

What you describe shouldn't be that hard to find. $400 is actually "middle" price range on that type of system and 50GB/month. You should be able to find what you want in the $300 or less range.

Also -- I suggest you don't get too specific on the exact CPU. A 700Mhz P3 isn't that much different than a 850Mhz P3 for something like a web server. 133Mhz FSB / 100Mhz FSB makes more of a difference... but in general, for web pages, even that isn't a huge factor.

Now, trying to find such a system like that with Windows 2000 at $400/month is a lot harder :)

But I am NOT an ISP nor am I selling anything! Why can't I comment and only have to make comments via email?

I obviously can't say specifics as that would seem to be frowned upon by the moderators.

I guess they want you to open a new thread in the other forums.

Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up problems.

dherman76 -- as for specific companies.... It all comes down to quality vs. how comfortable you are with things. Do you need ISP support? Are you doing your own software install?

General comments on the current ISP offerings...
====================================
Like I said, your price range gives you some flexibility. I just spent 4 weeks doing a similar search for a Win2K server (and Win2K costs $800 per machine so most ISP's charge a lot more than Linux).

I kept finding Linux servers from dozens of ISP's, many of which came recommended, in the price range you discuss.

You say 50GB+ on your bandwidth. Do you know what you are really at now? How soon until you go +?

Most leased boxes come with 128MB, but 256MB isn't that hard to find -- or you can get an upgrade within reason (still under your budget). Try to avoid any MONTLY cost on RAM upgrades... If possible, go with an ISP who is willing to do it strictly as a one-time fee.

My Past Experience
================
I come from a background where I've done VERY high end co-location. We are talking at least 4 full racks worth. $20K/month...

I've also done T1 and DSL install on the low end. It is only recently that I've been focused on "lower end co-location" like you describe. So all this is fresh in my head...

Plus I am doing everything myself, I know how to install and configure and support the OS. I don't want "ISP Support", that may not be the case for you.

As for my ISP selection
================
I ended up going with Weinbar in Phoenix, one of their employees is very active on the forum... these guys earn a "B+" grade on all the things that matter to me (quality of network, easy of contract, price, up front pricing and information, flexibility on rack config and almost everything else).

In fact, I'm a bit worried that their price is TOO GOOD and they won't be able to sustain their quality :) I didn't find a lot of ISP's who were able to offer what they have at the same price (especially on co-location).

Disclaimer:
Note that I haven't started with them yet. My server should be going in next week. But the site I'm putting down at Weinbar has a lot of very sophisicated network monitoring stuff in place, so I'll know how good it really is :)

My site is currently at dedicatedhosting.com -- and they are OK, but we have outgrown the leased server and it is time to move up. For the same money we are paying for a leased server at dedicatedhosting.com -- we can move to TWO of our own servers at Weinbar. I've also found dedicatedhosting.com's network tops out a little lower than I like -- I've seen 40KB/second max at times --- but my site doesn't have downloads, mostly very frequent and time-sensitive text (almost like a forum site).... so that hasn't been a issue for me.

Some people have shared their performance data (both burst download and latency) for Weinbar with me, and it looks very good.

I (and I'm sure a bunch of other people on this board) would be very interested in hearing about your experience with Weinbar. You're right--the deal there for colo seems almost too good, but it might just be one of those happy and rare occasions where you get a little more than your money's worth. Please keep us posted.

Has anyone had any experience with PWEBTECH? They quoted me a stellar price but I am interested to know how people like their service.

No no no, sorry, that came under your post. It was directed *only* to web hosts who wanted to quote dherman76 a dedicated package. *You* are free to recommend, discuss anything you like. Sorry for the confusion.

Discuss anything I like :)

Let's see.... I used to work for this person in Seattle, but I was under non-disclosure, but now that you have released me...
